Any toyota 22r experts on here?

I have a carburated 87 22r and it simply won't start cold. one wiff of starting fluid thru the intake pipe and away she goes. Any thoughts as to why its not getting fuel on a cold start? Do the carburated 22r's have a cold start injector? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

my yota done the same thing. It had sat for a while before I owned it. The choke flap was stuck open and it would not start cold. I baught some carb cleaner and sprayed all over it and in it, then I manually opened and closed it. After doing that it freed up and worked great.

Try this

Take the breather off and have someone try to start it while you look down in the carberator and see if you see any fuel comeing out. If fuel is comeing out you probly got a choke problem if fuel is not comeing out you might have a fuel pump problem. If you have not changed your fuel filter lately sometime you can get water in them and the will gell up in cold weather. Hope this helps

Cold start injector is for an efi setup.
If you have a 22r it's a carb motor.
If you have a 22re it's Electronic fuel injection

Here's a link for the carb setup. Has said above it could be the automatic choke not setup or weak from age. Or the accelerator pump is bad and when you give it a pump or two on a cold morning it shoots raw gas right down the carb for an easier cold start. Just like your doing with the ether.

if its fuel injected listen to the computer it controls your fuel.
carb. your floats control the fuel.its like you are running out
of gas you have to save a little to put in the carb.take
a hammer and peck on the side may have picked rust up.i dont
thank its been colding enough to worry about a choke
if you thank so take your hand and put over the carb.
i have stopped a lot of old briggs this way ie choking it
out.

Thank You. The choke seems to be working find at least on how it operates while running I am going to check the auxilliary accelerator diaphram. I suspect it could be the problem.

I completely agree with the above comment, the internet is with a doubt growing into the most important medium of communication across the globe and its due to sites like this that ideas are spreading so quickly.

Stock Carb

If you have a Toyota Carb on it throw it in the trash and get a Weber. Once you set the air/fuel mixture and idle on them, you never have to touch them again. They run alot better and the motor is alot more responsive. They will fire right up if its 0 or 100 outside.
