treeing help

What is the best way to correct a young from coming off the tree to meet you when you go to the tree he only comes off about 20 yards or so. I would like to correct this so I can hunt him in some nit hunts

Never pet or even speak nice to one coming to meet you (past puppy stage). When they come to meet you be stearn with them to start with and most will quit coming to meet you. If need be progress to a light switching. Shown your pleasure AT THE TREE, not off the tree.

The first thing i usually try especially with a young dog is to just grab em up right where they meet you and tie em right there, go on into the tree and throw a party for the other dogs and knock the coon out. usually after 3 or 4 times they start to figure out the fun is at the tree. Some guys will get rough with them when they come off but iv seen it backfire and they end up with a dog that leaves when he hears you coming, different things work with different dogs and no one method will work with all of them.

That is excellent advice Mr. Duemmer. Training a dog isnt a "one size fits all". You have to know your dogs temperament to know how and what will work to correct problems.

I thought UKC rules allowed a dog to meet you off tree if it turned around and went back to treeing. You also had to advise the judge that that was a characteristic of the dog prior to casting or treeing or something.

They might have changed the rules. The last hunt I was in was acouple years ago. I didn't think the dog would but I advised the judge just to be on the safe side. We were told to handle the dogs and she jumped two jumps toward me, bounced her feet off my chest, and two jumps back on the tree. took 5 seconds max. She got minused for "putting her head down and going back on trail". So there you go. I recon next judge will want one foot on the tree and the other one pointing like a bird dog. LOL

It's okay.

As long as you notify the judge prior to the hunt that your dog greets you as you approach the tree, it is acceptable.

Some guys hate that, but it is not their dog, and it is well within the rules.

yes ukc does allow your dog to greet you if you notify the judge but if I can correct this now there will be no question at hunt time the way I see it if not corrected you stand a chance of being screwed at some time or anouther Thanks for the help

Seems to me it's written in much more plain language than most rules. But that rule was written and not changed far prior to the fellers that wanted to incorporate PKC (not rules, but interpretatations of PKC rules) but ukc tolerated it , so that's where we are. So what? we got the Supremes what want to do interpretaions of the Constitution every time it suits them. Therefore , I can thoughly expect some backwoods Cracker that has antied up $1,000 to believe that he[s got a dog that was bred for the "RULES". to buy his way into arrogance ARRISTOCROCRACY.

How in the world are YOU going to correct a "fault " that is not a fault moroon? And you are probably wondering why every body does not play nite hunt wit chu? It is becaause of stupid handlers and breeding, but most of all , the Judges, the Supreme Court Justices who proclaim themselves to be the be all and the end all of coondog wisdom.
Yes, I've got them tied behind he barn.( makes you some kind of arristocrat? And yes ' I've got a few in stainlees steel cages beside the road to show off to HSUS , cause i AIN'T A DUMMY AS LONG AS WE GOT TO PUT UP WITH DEMOCRITS. Even though I will agree I understand your pain and it may be something that Democrats have simply had to endure that prep H can't handle.
