Big changes at MSA, it is actually a "SPORTSMENS CLUB".......We (myself and 4 other members) were hanging out and swimming the hounds Sunday morning. I haven't seen a dog swim there before unless there was an event going on. Pretty cool to see the grounds being used between events, plus the dogs got some good exercise.

Between pleasure hunting with other members this weekend and swimming the hounds, it has rekindled my involvement and interest in the sport.

Thank you to everyone involved.

If anyone wants to swim dogs during the week, send me a PM so we can hook up.

Maybe if there were people on the grounds more often we would have less break-ins and vandalism.

Isn't it amazing how quickly things got turned around??? A new look, a new interest and new members that are interested "for all the right reasons"! I will never be able to thank everyone enough for turning this club around in a hurry. wd

I Love to see this! I know Bob and I will be up there when we can be and do what we can to help out etc... I wish we had MORE time in every day... then We'd do more! Seriously we had such a great time at the event we went to up there. You guys(and gals) made us feel so NORMAL! lol

Well... gotta get caught up on here and try to get some REST tonight... WYatt(my beloved Bluedawg) coughed every 2 minutes... all night last night.... BAD night) Xrays show at least some pneumonia... and some inflammation around his heart... Now that he is on a narcotic cough med to give him rest... and antibiotics and such... he should heal up if he has no other lesions in his lungs... Hoping tonight will bring us ALL some rest. Having them as house pets has HUGE rewards BUT... man when they get sick it is alot like a sick child
SO... Have a good night, Y'all and tree one for Wyatt! He would surely love to be out there treeing one... maybe he'll get a good one tonight in his dreams!

NOT sure... we don't know yet if he breathed something into the lungs, if he has some throat paralysis, "just" an infection etc... He likes to "hunt" honey bees and has his nose in the grass all day snuffling stuff in... and he COULD have gotten something into the lung? Not sure. He is sleeping like a lamb right now. His coughing bouts have spread out now so there is some improvement! He's due for cough meds but I'll let him rest and give it to him when he wakes to cough again.... THis is as bad as having a young baby sick... since they cannot TELL us what they really feel...
SO... as to HOW he got in this shape????? Absolutely NO clue! Just hopeful those yucky spots in his lungs go away by next Xray... and that it is indeed "just pneumonia"!

I am amazed that you guys have so much fun with field events. It is a rarity the a club in these parts even has a treeing contest let alone any type of field events. Heck fire even the bench shows are on the endangered list here. One club out of three with a bench show? I remember back many years ago all the events: drag, speed, tree and bench shows were real popular but not now. I guess the further south and west you go, the fewer events you see. Also the number of dogs entered in the nite hunts has dropped off a bunch, too. thirty to forty dogs used to be the average and now 5 to 10 is average. I guess it is the ECONOMY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It is nice to take a young hound that is not ready for the Nite Hunts and put him in field events. It helps support the club, you get to show your dog off a bit and it strengthens the bond between you and your dog. And somewhere along the way you meet some good people.

The bench shows were one of the first things I did with the dog. In addition, the kids enjoyed putting him in youth events on the bench.

I quickly realized that he LOVED water, I traveled all over the northeast to put him in swim races. When he became GRWCH I started putting him in field trials.

It was pretty cool for my 5 and 7 year old kids to watch their coonhound come ripping out of the woods and grab the pole and tree during a field trial. Or for them to watch him come flying out of the box and jump 10-12 feet through the air into the water after that float. (My dog is the bluetick in those pictures that is leaping off of the banking, tell me he doesn't LOVE it)

To me there is nothing like watching your hound that is a CRAZED BEAST with a live coon, let his ears drop and his eyes sag and be ever so careful when your son or daughter has him on a bench.

I believe there is more to the hound events than the Nite Hunts. Field events give you the entire day to hang out with other houndsmen. You get to see some other really nice hounds, meet different people, support the club, and enjoy the day relaxing.

I loved the bench show and judged a many a good hound over the years. I guess my proudest moment was when my oldest son won the State Championship with his little redbone female we got from Mr. Jim Shipman. He trained her all the way by himself and he was 6 or seven then. The same day he won the treeing contest with my old redbone male. I had bought him from Mr. Jim about two years earlier. I have never entered a drag/speed race or a water race. No clubs around here ever had any. I do feel like your comments about showing off your dog and building a stronger bond with it makes good sense. I know for sure watching kids show on the bench is satisfying. You keep pushing 'em and having lots of fun. And good luck

Those are memories that you and your kids will never forgot. For son to train a dog for a bench show and win, you must have been proud. I know that I am impressed. I can only imagine his excitement watching his dog win a treeing contest and see his eyes when he was given the trophies.
