Something i cant figure out

Why us coonhunters waste all our time and money chasing dogs through the woods...
We complain about it, then do it again the next night..

is their a cure for this?

Wow,
Really nailed that one on the nose. lol
No cure just further in debt, more sore feet and crazy stories for all of us to share so we can keep remembering why this sport is so AWESOME to keep whining about. lol

But that was good

Here it is in a nut shell for me.

Hunting an average to below average dog makes me want to pull my hair out, (slick trees, trash running, holes, to many dens, big ears, mean, takes forever to tree). All these things make hunting miserable. Sure every dog does some of these things including mine however the key is to get a dog that does them very rarely.

I will not own or waste my time with these types of dogs anymore, I owned a few and none of them stayed with me for more then 3 months. The last 3 dogs I have bought for a total of 300$ and 2 of them were already ruunning and treeing,

If anyone wants to come hunt with any of them let me know (pm me). Just because you go out and spend 2,000-5,000 doesn't mean youre going to get a good consistent coon treer.

The key to enjoyable hunts is simply turn a nice dog loose. the fun then just comes as the night rolls on.

I agree with you a hundred percent on the whole dollar amount on hounds not giving anyone a true coon dog! Well Said.

Well I must glut for punishment then. I haven't ever bought a trained dog. I love the training process. I believe in giving a dog a fair chance and culling the proper way when they don't cut the mustard. I have a little dog 20 months old now that almost got culled a hundred times lol. He would tree a slick tree and when you went in scolded him he may go 200 yards and tree another. I have always trained my dogs alone its bad anough with the bad habbits they learn alone much less the habbits they pick up from company. Now he has been winning his fair share of hunts and looking good doing it. Guess its time to buy a new pup and start over.

Find a woman that understands or atleast pretends to. Any other way and you will be further in debt

Joey

I understand that one,
I have never been able to afford one of those apparent finished hounds.lol. People teach them and then price them so over priced its crazy. I have got very little in my hounds and they are turning out to be great hounds to me. I have been around several hounds and seen so many things I don't care for. So I would rather train mine my way plus nothing is greater then getting one where need be then seeing your rewards from hard work done.

Sorry just board an liked your posting. lol

OK TJ, I'm gonna plead insanity on this one. All the B&T guys think I've lost my mind hunting an English anyway, lol.

i was out last night till 1:30. my dogs are worn out. my legs and feet are a little sore. i would go out again tonight my my dogs are too used up. i told my wife i need a couple more dogs. i can't hunt everynight because my dogs are tired or sore. of course they do so much more work than i do.

If you have the money and you buy a "finished dog" I think that is wonderfull. But for me I just haven't ever wanted something you done. I have sold some dogs but only buy pups. It takes alot of time to really get a dog to what I called finished so maybe they aren't really over priced. If I sold this dog I'm working with now for $5000 it probably would be less than minimun wages if I was to punch a time clock every time that I have casted him....lol

A old man told me one time "if you want a dog that fits you buy a puppy not someone elses dog". Makes since everyone likes a different type of dog. I have bought many dogs and the only one i have ever liked I got him as a pup and started him the last of the kill season. Hunted him religiously through the summer. Beat him off possums, slick trees, and just plain old not wantin to go huntin. Come this past kill season it pretty much the same thing, just got to see a coon every once in a while. Then all of a sudden bam like sombody turned a switch on inside his head. When he feels that snap come off he throws dirt in ya face got in there got a track and got treed with the meat with so close to a 100% average the last two weeks of the season it was scary. I either seen a coon or a whole. Now he is a pure pleasure to go in the woods with and no other dog I go huntin with gives me as much pleasure to hear as he does. I didnt do it all and he didnt, but he did do most of it lol, We done it together fightin the sweat and the skeeters. Thats why I love it, when I walk in the local barber shop and hear the old man I give my coons to say "Son son, let me tell ya somthin that boy right there has got a hound. He brings me coons when no else is treein any." Hope that dont sound to much like im braggin lol. Dont mean to be.
