COONHUNTING

I followed the hounds
As a youthful lad
Oh how i loved it
Just like Dad

There were no papers, trackers and such
We didn't even tie the dogs up
Under the Rosebush, Spot took his nap
But he sure woke up, when Mom threw out the scraps

But on a warm and rainy night
Spot came alive when you got out the light
Now the light was a lantern, wasn't twenty-eight volt
Just a torn ole jacket, not a fancy Wick coat

Back then it was a hobby, didn't cost a dollar
Now it is 4-wheel drives and fancy shock collars
Breeding, running ads, spending ever cent
I sat and wonder, where real Coonhunting went

I know you'll laugh and think i'm out of my mind
And say ole Spot wasn't worth a plug dime
But just be honest before you call me a bum
And wonder which one of us had the most fun

Jeff,

it's sad but no truer words have been spoken.Everbody calls it progress, but it sure leaves you longing at times for the GOOD OL' DAYS don't it?I remember coonhuntin' with the old carbide lights.Had WAY more fun back in them days than I do now.Great poem.

very nice poem. but there was a few thing that he forgot to mention that i will help him with. mabe he will read this and beable to put in poetic form. as my talent fails me with poetry
...he forgot to mention getting stuck with the old car , trying to run down ol spot , that was absolutly running the guts out of that deer, then loosing him after he left the country. after he got the car unstuck he spent the rest of the night looking for ol spot, only to resort to laying his jacket along the road were he cut him. hoping ol' spot would be there the next day. oh ya , he also failed to mention that he got home at 6 am and had to be to work by 7. and probably the only coon he seen all night was the one that run across the road that he turned ol spot loose on, only to have him jump the deer track and leave the country. and yes the last 4 times he turned ol spot loose , there was a similar story. lol lol..
...i am being sarcastic here, but when i remember the old days that is what i remember. wouldn't go back for anything, but the time and the youth. oh i remember those days well.

i bet you could still still get a carbide light somewhere. and you can leave the trackers off and just walk hunt. bet it aint as much fun as you think you remember. i know i sure like all the modern conveniences. especially my garmin. and i know i don't want a light i have to keep putting water in. and i'm right fond of driving to my hunting spots in my 4x4. 2 wheel drive won't get it. you're right, it's so easy to remember only the good stuff from the old days. as for me, these are the best of times. things have never been this good. i put a lot of effort in the Americans for Prosperity to ensure it stays that way.

A different Twist

I also followed the hounds
as a youthful lad
Just a young boy, trying to be like dad

No papers, no truck
no modern things

Just an old dog, that thought he had wings
Turn ole spot loose
just to try out our luck

a coon is what we wanted
what we saw varied

possom, a skunk
a deer or a squirrel
ole spot never cared
He gave em all a whirl

A long deer chase
that we tried to follow
but we got stuck in that chevy
down in the hollow

Dad yelled and he cussed
and he yelled a little more
that was just before
he kicked that big dent in the door

Old buddy Don showed up
long about 6
just to give a hand
or to get in his licks

We never saw
ole spot again

'cept in my mind
when I hear his voice in the wind
