In my opinion, the definition of a"purebred" dog is a dog who can be bred to a like dog and produce offspring that are consistently similar to itself. In this situation, you have a higher chance of knowing what characteristics are going to show up in your puppies.
When you cross two different breeds, you are crossing many different genetic strains and you have no way of knowing what you may be getting from that cross even several generations down the line. Genetically, it is unstable, although in this situation, since both dogs are Coonhounds, I don't think it would have as strong an effect as if it were, say, a Beagle and a Coonhound being crossed. Outcrossing to different LINES within the same breed can be beneficial at times, but it is not generally practiced by crossing two different breeds... simply put, it's much more of a gamble as to what characteristics (physical AND hunting-wise) your pups will inherit.
Just the facts, fellows... as I said, I think a man should be able to do whatever he wants with the hounds he feeds, cares for, and follows in the woods...
