My Catahoula/Leopard pup

He is 4 months. NALC registered, but I am getting him UKC too. Really like him. Smart for his age, and already very attached to me.
What do you guys think about him/ all Leopards?

Younger in this pic.

Thanks! I may be getting his female littermate . She would be for sale if I do, because I am keeping him as a stud dog.

Thanks for all comments! He is only NALC right now, so his papers dont say too much and I dont know very much about their bloodline. I am friends with the people that raised him, they own his dam and his sire comes from West Tn.

Would love to see a pic of your dog!
I plan on looking for some females in about 2 months(building some kennels at the moment) so let me know if you have any! Would like a breeding age female, and a nice pup of any age.

which is he? Leopard or Catahoula they are two different breeds. He looks to have some Double merle traits which isn't a good thing. But he sure is a pretty dog good luck with him.

He is a Catahoula. What do you mean by double merle...never heard of it. What effect does it have, and what would it effect if I bred him?

Alrighty, I have done my research lol It is very possible he is a double merle, both his parents were merle so he could be homozygous. The problems with this is that homozygous dominate genes carry problems like deaf/blind, but I know he is neither of those. I found a test you can get and swab their mouth to find out their genetic makeup, I am going to have it done for sure. I dont want to breed a dog that will pass any bad traits. I did find that a MM dog is usually mostly white, which he is not. I also found that a blue eye/merle coat is a bad carrier of deaf or blind or diseases.

If I get a solid female to breed him to even if he is MM, no pups could be double mere, but would have merle coats.

Any other comments? I know all Catahoula or Leopards have similar issues, its just the breeds because through time they have been bred for color and caused these "issues".

I do not think that you can hunt catahoulas in any night hunts. I may be wrong but I think has to be american leopard hound to hunt. Pretty dog though like I said I am not sure.

Nice looking dog. Do you have any idea what his bloodlines are?

The merle gene doesn't work the same in Catahoulas as it does in most of the other merle breeds. Dogs that look single merle may actually be double merle and ghost merles are fairly common too (look solid, bute carry the merle gene). Plus there are a couple of color diluting genes in the Catahoula, not just the merle gene.

Sounds like you're gonna have a blast with that young'un!

Thanks CCR!
I checked out your web site, and I really like your dogs!
I would like to find a really nice quality female pup(not in a hurry) to maybe breed to him in a few years, but mostly just be my dog like he is. I take him everywhere I get a chance to. We have cattle and alot of horses, so mine will be used on stock as well as a little pleasure hunting.

I own one quite similar
he did not come with an "off" switch
he never stops running
If left alone
a Catahoula will eat your whole house
One of the best frisbee dogs on the planet btw
was the tail naturally docked?
3 in my dogs litter had short tails
these dogs need a lot of exercise and a "job"
my dogs job is his ball
he has to have his ball or else
also I might add he is not too bright
I have 3 Carolina dogs, the Catahoula and a Beagleboy

I have been breeding Catahoula's since 1972 and a general rule we used was never breed two double glass eyed dogs together. I have broken this rule a time or two due to having two exceptional dogs or getting several killed and running low on dogs. The double merle seems a little different in Catahoula's than it is in Leopard Hounds. As long as I have used a dark eyed dog on a double glass eyed dog I havent had any mostly white pups. Every pup that has predominantly white forward of the shoulders is usually deaf. I try to minimize the amount of white with selective breeding. The bob tail is also uncommon and is discouraged. Me I prefer the natural bob tailed dogs and have kept breeding it over the years, if the dog was brood quality. The red merle in Catahoulas is also a beautiful pattern but I have lost that color due to the death of some key dogs and breeding fewer dogs for my own use.

Show dog people have really messed up Catahoula's. They are breeding for big double glass eyed dogs at what ever the cost. The big dogs are useless as stock dogs as they cant run all day with a horse and work stock like the fifty pound dogs can. A true Catahoula should work all day like a bird dog. I for one will always breed for working dogs and not show dogs.

Catahoula's also tend to be one person dogs and will usually choose that person themselves thus requiring good bonding with the master. My wife has one that chose her over me and the dog only minds me when it wants to. They can be extremely protective so I would discourage aggresion if the dog is going to be exposed to the public. I like mine to be one person dogs because they dont get stolen like a lot do.

Thanks for all the comments! I am trying to get started back hunting alot more and dont know if I will have time to spend with this pup like I thought I would , so if anybody would be interested in buying or trading for him let me know.
I would trade on a dog box for a small truck, or any coonhunting equipment or maybe a hound.
He gets prettier everyday. He minds well and knows how to sit, load, lead, tie. He loves to play with his toys. I have never saw him act aggressive toward another dog or anybody. Very sweet boy. He will be 6 months on April 7th.
