My hunting buddy and I have two pups out of Bodacious. They are 11 months old. Mine has been started for a couple of months. His pup had done very little until a couple off weeks ago. Now he craws on the wood and trees like a pro. Big loud mouth and going like a ball of fire.
Way too many people are looking for a coondog at 6 months old. And they are just plan nuts to expect it. I've been following coondogs for over 50 years. I think I know a little about coondogs. Most dogs start showing their abilities around 8 to 12 months............. not at 4 or 5 months. A natural treedog, may show strong tree signs at 5 or 6 months, but they still have to mature in the woods.
JUST MY PRIVATE OPINION, PUBLICLY EXPRESSED LOL
I agree 100%. Don't push too hard too young. Let them be pups. I got a 7 month old that so far all I've done is obedience training and took on lots of walks in the woods. I'll show her a caged coon in about another month to see if she's interested. If not, I'll wait another month and show her another one. I don't really get too worried until there 12-14 months old and showing no interest. My 3 year old female was 13 months old before she would even bark at a caged coon and now she trees them all the time. So don't give up, be patient.
