why do people think if a hound is blind in one eye they wont turn out to be a hound . i have hunted 4one eyed hounds everyone was decent coon hounds . i have had people lately tell me a one eyed hounds cant do the job . i have a one eyed pup right now startin to train him hes doinpretty good i have hunted the 4 that were coon dawg. my opinion a one eyed hound has to use and trust his nose more i think it helps trainin to whats everybodied opinion on one eyed hounds

Why are these hounds 1-eyed in the first place?
I can understand a hunting accident or accident or some sort, but the puppy?
Were any of these hounds related? If so, could it be a genetic trait?

I hunted with a blue dog that had to have an eye removed because of some kind of disease. He hunted pretty well, but it did make him a bit aggressive on that side. If you came up on the side he couldn't see, it would startle him.

I also hunted with a female english hound that was one eyed. She did a really nice job that night, but the owner said she would grab anything that came up on her blind side.

I have a gyp that got her eye knocked out while hunting a year ago and it hasn't affected her in the least as far as temperment or hunting ability is concerned except I think it might hurt her a little when she throws her head up to tree.She doesn't tree quiet as hard as she did before but it may have nothing to do with her eye being gone.She can still on occassion get the job done and she will have a home here until the day she dies.

He will be 5 weeks old Friday. Well, he may not end up blind in that eye, but he will end up having to have surgery in about another month to tack his eyelid.

I did not know, that when the mother cleans her puppies, she keeps their hairs on their eyelids growing in the right direction. If a puppy is raised on a bottle by people, we didn't know to do this, to stimulate the hair growing in the right direction, and now our pups eyelashes are turning in. We have been having to put alot of medication in them and stretch they eyelids to keep the hairs turned out. It is really weird. I didn't know about this until now. It started with 2 puppies, and now it is just ours. The other pups eyes have cleared up completely.

Where they eyelashes constantly rub on the eyeball, it has made an ulcer, and if it dosent get better, it could cause him to go blind in that eye.

I think that the old saying is true: "If you are lacking in one of your senses, it will be made up for in the others."

Is that what happened to your pup??

naw none of these hounds were related my pup i have know before their eyes were he jabbed a piece of cedar chip in his eye vet looked at it said he would be permantly blind in that eye when he gets a little older im going to have his eye taken out vet said to wait a little before we do it the 4 hounds i hunted were not related on was a walker huntin accident another was bluetick and one english both huntin accidents and a plott really bad huntin accident got slashed by a bobcat. here lately quit a few guys have told me i should shoot my pup but i wont hes mine i was just wonderin what the big deal about a one eyed dawg is it dont matter if they have one or 2eyes if they are coondawgsit doesnt matter to me would like other peoples view thanks jimmie

I agree. If they have another eye, that's all they really need. Plus, most dogs use their NOSES to tree coons, not their eyes. I'm like you, I don't see what the big deal over a dog with one eye is. We have already gotten used to the fact that Blacky would be blind, and then the vet said maybe not. Who knows. He's still pretty just the same. And, he trailed a house cat today--4 1/2 weeks old. He did, I'm not lying.

I have a one eyed pup that is ten months old 3 nights ago it run and treed its first night in the woods by its self it has never even smelled a coon tail. It got its eye put out when its mother stept on it at 3 weeks old.I have seen one eyed dogs that could get mean if you come up on its blind side,but they had their eye put out when they got older. This pup never had it long enough to get use to having one so it doesnt bother it.

Don`t worry about the one eye.One of the best I have ever had lost an eye didn`t affect her hunting and treeing coon,if lost while young shouldn`t have much of an affect on pup.

If you can take a dog to the woods and enjoy hunting it, does it really matter what anybody else thinks? NO. So I wouldn't worry to much about it. I am sure folks would say something if I was huntin a three legged, one nutt, one eyed hound. But I'd just name him Lucky and keep huntin if I liked him. You are the one that has to be happy. The first real coondog I ever hunted with, was a one eyed walker owned by a buddy of mine. He had no problem treeing coons, until he went blind in his one good eye. His hunting career was done when that happened.

I personally wouldn't want a one eyed pup just because I wouldn't want to put alot into a pup that is one eye away from being totally blind. There is enough risk in pups without that, but thats just my opinion.

Have you tried to hunt the dog who is now blind? I had a B&T female years ago that lost sight in both eyes at different times due to hunting injuries. It was not fun watching her run into trees before striking but once she struck you would never beleive she was blind. She was still as fast as most dogs on the track and treed most of the coons she struck.

Yep, he took him hunting a few times but with all the running into and off of stuff, the dog got so he didn't want to go hunting. It was kind of pitiful to watch, so he retired him.

The most accurate dog I have ever saw was a one eyed beagle. Yes a beagle of all things. Never believed it if I had'nt seen it.
