9 Pound Bear Cub

One of the guys that works for the local power company found a bear cub in the middle of the road near where I live on Dec. 19th. It was by its self and only weighed 9 pounds. It was taken to the Waynesboro wildlife center and as of Feb. 2nd it was up to 30 pounds. Could this cub have been born last winter or was it born late? I didn't hear what the wildlife center thought the age of the cub was. A cub born last Feb. or so should have been bigger than that wouldn't you think?

Strange story, a year old cub should be 80 lbs or so.

Talked with the people at the Wildlife Center today and they said the cub was up to 40lbs. and they were preparing her to be turned loose around the first of April. I ask how old they thought she was and they said she was a yearling. They said when she came in she was malnurished and was skin and bones. She should have weighed around 30-50lbs. Mother was probably killed around the first of Oct. and the cub was struggling to find food and basically living on what it had stored up.
