Three Legged Race!!!!

Thought I would share last nites hunt with you.

Over the years I have treed several unusual coon, some missing ears, some missing tails(usually boars) and got one big male one time had half his front foot missing in a slight curvre-the shape of a trap- so figured that was the cause for his partial loss. Also got a couple of blond coon too.

Last nite was crystal clear no clouds, perfectly still and a FROSTY 28 degrees - perfect! Went to load dogs and noticed the old female was starting her heat, so took the pup and my two year old Kate female. Turned loose on the edge of a secluded set of corn fields surrounded by big woods - probably close to 100 acres of corn still standing. Both dogs struck right away the race was on...the coon circled the field a few times then crossed into another corn field, did the same then into a small swamp, then into the third corn field. After some time I figured this has got to be an older coon that has been run before did not want to tree!
Dogs ran around those corn fields and woods and swamp non stop for an hour and half then treed in a hedge row in a huge Maple with vines and another tree that fell over into it. First glance into the leafless tree it appeared to be empty. After walking around I noticed a big coon tail about 12 feet off the ground, coon was well hidden and down in a crotch and would not look. A crack of the 22 near the coon and it moved and exposed it's head then the second shot coon leaped out just a growling and MAD..bullet had just grazed it's head, the coon was big and the two young dogs tried but could not finish both got bit and just a screamin and bawling trying to get in for a hold. I dispatched coon and was admiring the size, noticed it was an old female and completely missing it's back left foot. It amazes me how tough these coon are and boy that old female did not want to tree! How it had lost it's foot who knows!

Someday I'll tell you about the White Oak I climbed one night to retrieve a hung up coon.. tree was covered with poison oak!!!

somewhere around 1965 went hunting with a friend in Ky.he hunted a three legged redbone that night he told me he only needed three legs to run with my dog's(Ain't Going to tell You what I told Him) we where hunting on Dale Hollow Lake this hound had his left rear leg off at the hip my hound went to the right & got treed we started to him ole Red was really pouring it on the other way I thought he was after a deer about the time we got to my dog Ole Red treed we went to him he had treed a three legged coon with his left rear leg off up close to his hip.I was at this man's place later he had ran over ole Red's good leg that hound would balance himself & walk on his front feet didn't seem to bother him at all he could get around real good.See Ya

Thems pretty good stories. Here's an odd thing I had happen one night.Turned my dogs loose down on the creek one night and they go in and start to treeing.Got in to them and sure enough, they had a coon in a big ole tree.Shot that thing one time and it starts to fall.About half way down it just stops and we can see it hanging there swinging in mid air.I'm thinking what the heck is going on.I looked thru my scope and the coon had been caught in a leg trap and the chain on the trap had caught on a branch and there the coon was just a swinging away.Tried to shoot the chain into, but we never could get the coon.

Couple winters back my hunting Partner & I turned loose on a creek 3am temp around 25 dogs struck a red hot track ran about two min's treed as we got to the tree my partner pulled his pistol I noticed the coon hind leg was shaking real bad. I asked him what in the heck he thought was wrong with it his Ans.I guess it is cold. While I was laughing at him the coon fell straight down on the dog's (We Never Fired A shot) I didn't want my dog a hold of that thing but it was too late Another man was with us he took the coon & skinned him he said there was a hole thru his hip's.I suppose someone had treed it earier that night & it had got away from them then we came along. the coon was fat & looked good.

We treed a coon one night and shot it out.I noticed while I was shootin' at it that somethin' looked funny.
It hit the ground and then it really looked funny. This coon had had its snout chopped off right behind its canine teeth. It had been done awhile 'cause it was all healed.Only thing I can figure is that poor ole coon had stuck its nose in a trap.

Three legged race

We treed a LARGE boar last night and it had only 3 feet and his partner was in the tree next to him. Looked like a old trap wound all healed up.

Clumsy Lover

I saw one like that had to be a trap. The Midget had a litter of pups this year every one of them was born without a snout.

I got one one time, when it came down there was all this clanging going on. The trap was still on it. Years ago when I use to climb the hemlock trees, I found a trap in the tree, with a coon skeleton in it.

I think she was just tired. She said she had a long day at school.
OR
We scared her with the coyote story. Wait until we hear them one night. she will be holding onto us all night.

Thats neat,

She must have been a Tough ole Critter,

One nite I treed a Coon that was a little Scary,
My old hound ran a hard track on it, at first I thought he was trashing, Then she treed, I found the Coon and Shot it, It growled on the limb, well I shot again and out it came, it was amaising, it was almost as big as the little Gyp I was hunting, and it was fighting mad, I was scared it would hurt my hound so I grabbed my hound by the Collar, the Coon was bristled up, and came Charging at us, I shot the Coon in the head and put it down.
That was the Biggest, Meanest Coon I have ever seen, I sold him, and got eight whole dollars. LOL
