spoil a pup or not ???

I have heard mixed answers on this... Can you spoil a pup too much? Some say let them be a dog, they mature quicker. How do you guys treat your new pup?

define spoil...

There's nothing wrong with lovin' on a pup... It helps build trust and bonds... but the pup better always know who the boss is. A pup that loves its master is more likely to want to please, and a pup that knows its place in the chain of command will have more respect for its owner.

But, yea, I like spoilin em' lol

I think a bond should be made between you and youre dog for the dog to reach its full petential but NOT until it's already treeing coon. Spoil them as young dogs and usually they don't want to hunt. My dogs are my buds but they realize when I unsnap them what I expect. When you spoil a dog like a little child don't expect that dog to hunt for anyone else.

I believe a dog must EARN its spoils! I don't spoil them until they prove time and time again that they deserve to be spoiled!

Spoil a pup like people spoil their children? Absolutely not!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now, if you are talking about provding an intellictual environment that nutures a young dog while providing consistant bounderys, that is not spoiling.

However, if you let your dog rule the household shame on you. You are doing doing that dog or you any favors.

Thanks for the replys. I have a pup thats 12 wks old, I get her out everynight after work and walk her on a leash,(she leads like she's been doing it for yrs.) Then i play with her & baby her like most people do to puppy's. I have not had her to the woods yet because our weather sucks. I have been told by some, like one of the posters on here already said " don't pet her up until she deserves it" thay said petting should mean something. She knows her name, she knows what NO means, and she sits on command fairly well.

I can assure you spoiling your pup will not hurt it's desire to hunt if it's in it to begin with.

Absolutely,
The special pups that I choose to work with, come inside on a reg. basis to visit with the family and they get SPOILED .When they stop acting like a puppy, they start getting treated like a adult dog,and not a minute before.I love my dogs,as iam a forth generation houndsman, but when it comes time, I am at the ready to discipline my dogs and praise them the same.Iam the ALPHA in the pack and a person has to know the transistion cues in the behavior of the dog,iam not an expert by no means but I have an understanding because I was raised with hounds.Dont worry about it, you'll know the transistion point from puppy to adult.
