This Snow Sucks!!!

This is the LONGEST I've went in 4 years without turning a dog loose at night!!! The last time I was out was Feb. 4, 2010, going on 2 WEEKS and it's not lookin any better! We've got almost 3ft here! I'm just about ready to go out and walk the creeks!

Had my male dog clicking real nice there the last week. The last 4 trees he made were split by himself with a coon and now I feel like I'll be starting back over again!

SO SO SO FRUSTRATING! I'm thinking about gettin in the truck Friday after work with the dog and driving SOUTH until there's less than a foot of snow on the ground just so I can turn loose a few times!!!

How are you guys that are snowed in holding up? I'm about to go nuts here real soon as you can see I've been posting pretty much all night, every night! LOL

Joe, we have a little over two feet here, and it just keeps falling! I also had one of my females clicking pretty well and just like you said, it feels like ya have to start over! We haven't been out in 2 weeks, counting tonight. Your post described exactly how I feel! lol...And it's not just the snow, we've had really strong winds and it has drifted the snow in some places up over my head!!!

At this time I would like to thank our southern neighbours for taking our snow this year! We have had a good winter, although cold, we have only had one snowfall here amounting too about 5". Again a big thank you from all of us to all the snowed in hunters on the south side of the border!

Raining and 40 degrees here this AM. Bad thing is there's not a coon within 800 miles. Gotta wait until spring and try my hounds on black bear.

The worst part about it Josh is the coon are moving but it is just plain too miserable to hunt.

We've got 2 young hounds that need fine tuning before the nite hunts start up, another one I need to get familiar with, a pup to start and 2 old dogs that need the rust knocked off.

I have a feeling we'll be hunting on snow and ice into April. I don't mind that, but snow up past the knees consistently is too much.

The way I look at it is this.

Those coon will still be there to tree when it's not pure missery to hunt in.

I had a dog that I have countless refrences on that I swear could tree a coon in any weather and believe me I tested this many nights. I don't know how he managed to tree coon on some of those nights but I loved that about him. In all honesty though even some of those 5 degree nights that he treed 5 to 6 coon it just wasn't worth it. Me and whoever would be with me that night would cut him loose and get in the truck turn the heater up and wait 20 minutes or so, roll down the windows and there he'd be hammering away.

He was a grandson to Hillbilly Mac and was a tracking machine.

He didn't take 40 minutes to lay those coon up either. It was usually 15 to 20 minutes before he would have one treed. My greatest meamory of him was treeing a coon along the road on a telephone pole right down the road from my house. He had the best locate on any dog I have ever heard in person. It sounded like someone was beating him. He slick treed 3 times in 2 years of hard hunting. He was the only dog I have ever had that could care less when you knocked a coon out to him. He carred more about treeing then he did chewing on a dead coon. Sorry for the long response but that dog deserves my respect.

Can't wait to get back at it but it looks like it may be a few more weeks..

ENOUGH HERE TO

In my part of the SOUTH ,the BLUE RIDGE MT. OF VA. ,we have had more snow here than we have had in my 44 years of living. We do get some snow but nothing like this, normaly 6 to 10 a year, if we are lucky. But this year we have got 15in. one time, 15 in. another time, and 10in. the last time. Thank JESUS, some of it would melt off between times, but we still have 12in. left on the ground. Thank the LORD, we can drive 1 hour and a half east of here and leave some of the snow behind, only a inch or so down there and they have coon too, so I guess I cant complain ,but I am still human. PRAISE JESUS BOYS, SPRING IS NOT FAR OFF it gives us something to look foward to!!!! AL GORE , IS A NUTT.

SOMETIMES ITS NOT A MATTER OF COULD, BUT RATHER SHOULD.

SNOW AND ICE CAN BE HORRIBLE ON DOGS FEET AND LEGS.

WE HUNTED OUR OLD HANK DOG AT SETW DAYS WHEN IT SNOWED SO BIG THAT YEAR. 1ST NIGHT, HUNTED IN 18 INCHES OF SNOW. WHERE THE SNOW WASNT FRESH IT HAD A SHELL OF FROZEN ICE ON TOP.

HANK CAME BACK TO ME AT THE TRUCK. I WAS HORRIFIED BY WHAT I SAW. YOU COULD TRACK HIS BLOOD TRAIL IN THE SNOW WHERE THE ICE HAD CUT HIS FEET AND LEGS SO BAD.

WE WITHDREW HIM RIGHT THERE AND BACK TO THE HOTEL AND A WARM BATH HE WENT. IT JUST WASNT WORTH IT.

I agree with the MN guy,

We live in this crap to hunt, ice, snow and Ice. Every time I turn dogs loose, tears up their feet. The worst winter for hunting I ever seen in WI. LOL
