I wouldent want a dog that runs past coon, I dont know why anyone would... I doubt you would do much winning with one that is consistantly having coon treed behind it.

Depends on how far the dog will hunt by it's self. Some dogs hunt too far, some don't hunt far enough. Would you rather walk your dog too a track and then watch hime tree it? Or would you prefer to stand just off the road and let your dog go find a coon.

Neither is a fault, if that is the style you like.

By the way, I don't like my dog to pass a coon to tree one, but I don't want to have to walk him to the tree either.

I think we have to look for a happy medium that we can live with.

I agree with Josh on not wanting my dog to pass up coon just cause he wants to run a country mile then decide to start hunting.
You can have a hard hunting dog that can tree coon right out of the gate as appose to one that just wants to ramble the country for a section then figures might as well start to hunt here.

Both can win hunts consistantly a lot depends on which one gets first strike cause both trees will be worth 125 and the tracking speed is another factor how many trees are they good for deep dog has to have overpowering mouth could be hard to hear over a loud every breath close tree dog

I want a dog that gets in the woods and start hunting and aint babbling or trying to get away from the other 3 on the cast. Nothing makes me more aggravated than that babbler that gets first strike and is smelling a good dogs hind end all nite getting me too tree points. Then you or dog makes wrong move and that peice of dog wins the cast. I have seen this happen way to many times. But my answer to the question a dog should take first track it incounters weather at road of 1000 yards in. As long as its a honest strike and a tree put to end I can't ask for anything more.

Best kind of comp dog?

The best kind is the kind that can put the quick easy coon up before anyone else in the cast and the one that is smart enough to get the heck out of the patch and go on when he/she is hunting with a bunch of idiots on a cast!

I have one here that is just like that and it sure is nice!
