how do you all teach a young dog to walk on the lead

I put a collar and lead on them and hand them over to our resident pup trainer, our 7 year old son. He won't divulge his secrets but they are completely broke within a couple hours ;0)

For starters i put leash on my pups and tie them to a pole so they will get tired of fighting leash and than i just start working with them and it takes no time at all... it may take two to three hours by tieing dog to pole but when he or she quits fighting the leash for thirty mins. they are ready to be worked with. and it takes no time at all... but you need to walk them every night for awhile so they keep this way....

after you teach them to lead in the open take them into thick stuff and really teach them to lead. i carry a small switch in right hand. any time they go on wrong side of anything i slap them on the nose... i xpect them to walk where i do behind me in th thick stuff

You mean you all actually have to put a leash on your dogs?
I just tell mine to come on.

chain break them first.i usually tie mine up for about a week before i try to get them to lead and they don't fight at it so bad.

I do this too. I pop them once & then I usually only have to hit the ground or whip the air in front of them after that.

I've had a couple I never could get to lead on the first drop. I felt bad, but I had to give them a pop with a stick if I had to walk any distance to the first drop.

THERE IS NOTHING BETTER THAN A YOUNG CHILD OR YOUNG PERSON TO HELP WITH HOUNDS. I HUNT WITH MY NEIGHBORS 15 YEAR OLD SON AND BETWEEN HIM AND MY DOG WE HAVE A LOT OF GOOD TIMES. HE LOVES TO HEAR THOSE HOUNDS TRAIL AND TREE. HE DOES MOST OF MY HANDLING FOR ME.

Frances Gail starts our puppies on the lead at 8-10 weeks old. She checks out her flowers while leading the puppy on the leash. By the time they are 4 months old and I start them in the woods, they are very used to leading. I would reccomend using a choker collar for older, headstrong dogs. They have some with spikes that will disconfort a dog that pulls while not really hurting them. I have some guys that train hounds for me that break them to pull the lead that is dropped on the ground and follow, without any leading at all. They use an e-collar for this training.

Mr Hutto I find your post ironic/amusing. Please let me explain.
When I saw your last name it reminded me of a name I knew from years past. I never met the man, Mr. Hutto but he was from SC also. What I found amusing about your post is the Mr. Hutto I knew by name was perhaps one of the BEST dog trainers in the country. Perhaps you are related to him, I would imagine you are since it is an unusual name and your both from the same part of the country. Perhaps he got his start asking one simple question about leading a dog. Perhaps you will end up with the skills he had. Good Luck.
