Cabelas sells them. I went to a local shop here in IA and got mine with a magnet mount antennae for $135 and he took regular CB s in on trade. Never bought much off e bay though just prefer kinda knowing who I deal with.

I'm positive you need a marine antennae the other type won't work. Also be sure you don't try it without the right one or you could fry you're radio.

I looked at the freq. and it's about 156.000 mhz. If you can find a antenna that has that in it's freq. range it will work. After you buy it go to a local cb shop and have them tune the antenna to 156.000 for the max output.

Has anyone heard that marine band radios will burn out the new Garmin DC30 collars if used within 100 yds of them.
Thanks, DJK

a Shake Spear Ant. Model MRF45.

So this Ant. needs to be set ???

Technically yes. Its like a carburetor on a car: It's made to go on your engine and car but to get optimum performance, it needs to be tuned for each application.

This is coming from years on cb radio and now ham radio hinch my user name. If you tune the antenna, it will perform better.

As for the hand helds think of the radio as a mini microwave. It will only put out 5 to 7 watts because when you talk on it, its against your face. And all radios put out radiation like a microwave, so to be safe they don't allow as much wattage as a mounted radio does. Because you have glass and metal between you and the antenna in your truck so it is safe to run the normal 25 watts they put out. Hope it helps, I will try ebay.

I bought a Uniden radio and the shop carried a magnet mount with them. Mine gets out real well. Have reached about 15 miles on a good day but that was getting hard to talk. 5 miles isn't a problem. I don't know much about radios and don't claim to but IMO you're better off to make sure you have the correct antennae to match so you don't ruin the radio. I have also heard the same thing about Garmins burning them up and would recommend turning it off before talking, JMO never tried to see what happens. lol

I'll look and let you know what type of antennae he sold too. I'm thinking it's a Whistler or something like that, but I'll read the name and post. Hope this helps.

I have a handheld and a mobile. Both are Unidens. The truck antennae is similar looking to any CB antennae but I'm almost sure they're different as far as the frequencies. I personally would rather buy one made for a marine radio than risk burning up my radio.

YOU ARE RITE U (((MUST))) USE A VHF ANT. IF YOU ARE USEING MARINE BAND RADIOS, IF NOT IT (((WILL BURN))) YOUR RADIO UP !!! U CANT USE A CB ANT. WITH MARINE BAND.IT MIGHT WORK FOR A SHORT TIME THEN ITS DONE. U SHOULD NEVER NEED TO SET A MARINE BAND ANT. THERE ALL THE SAME FEQ.

Garmins and radios

Yes, Redman hound is right about the radios burning up the garmin trackers! I know a couple of hunting crews that bought the garmin trackers this past year to use during the summer and did not know about the problem of using the radios while having the tracker on. Three different crews had their trackers burn up. Garmin says don't even have your radio on/monitor while using the tracker!

I haven't tried this but I did read where you can change the collar ID to any number below 30 and your collar will be around 152 mhz and the marine radio is around 156 so it will not hurt anything. I personally have NOT tried this and would rather turn my system off then risk ruining it. Just letting you know.

We fried 2 of the Garmin astros's in one trip. Sent them back to Garmin and they fixed them for free. They said that the problem was fixed and it shouldn't happen again. We'll see I guess
