Im courious.

I was just thinking the other day about training young dogs and getting them started in the woods. I was just wondering how everyone else gets there dogs started. Im not looking for advice or anything, but I'm just interested in seeing what you think is the best way to start a young dog or just the way you like starting them. Whichever works for you.

Re: Im courious.

i like to start mine in the daytime in the woods, getting them useing there nose, once a pup starts after squirrel,or rabbit or whatever it can chase then i start them at night, wish i had a place that pups could run loose fisrt 6 or 7 months,a pup can learn more out an about on its own than you could ever teach it,this is just mt opinon, its the way my uncle alwys liked to do an it works good 4 me

i like to get them fired up with a coon hide then lay a few blind drags and when they go to treeing those i'll show them one caged coon get them fired up and turn it loose. i like for them to be able to watch it run away and give it about a 3-4 minute head start and turn the pups loose after that i'll take them along at night. i don't force them to go hunting when i start taking them at night like to let them go at their own pace. the one i have now would run and tree a blind drag at three months old i mean blow the top out. he got tree on a few dens during day time walks around four months old started treeing with my female at night around the same age. he would stick with me till we were about 100 yrds then would go to her and check the tree and start treeing. before five months old he split and held pressure with a coon. he has been splitting pretty consitant since 5 1/2 months old. we hunted him a couple weeks ago with his mother and a nice walker female he split treed five times 3 coons a den and a slick not bad for not being seven months old yet. i believe i'll be hunting him at the ashland bluetick day at around 8 months old

Re: Im courious.

I agree 100%. I take my pup out for a walk almost everyday when i get home from work out in the trees. Just let her run around for 30-45 mins and check things out. By the time they hit the woods at night they know how to use there nose and how to get around in the woods.

I like to start them in the woods by themselves just taking them where they are likely to run up on a hot track and hopefully tree it by themselves. They will if you work at it and give them time. I tried running them with an older dog, hides and cage coons and releasing coons for them but I decided I liked the results of just taking them hunting better.
