I used them quite a bit when I was a teenager. then a few of my friends dads who worked in the coal mines would give me their old wheat lights....some would last for a few months but others would last for several years.

My grandfather is who started me on the carbide lights......I still have two of them at my dad's place.

I coonhunted for the first time in 1983. The man I went with had a carbide and a 5 cell I think. I still have a carbide I bought when I was 12 which was 3 years later. Its all I knew there was.

Carbide light and saving up for a 5 cell flashlight. Only used the flashlight at the tree, because those batteries were supposed to last the whole season. I remember I was one of the last ones to switch to electric. In the summer, everyone else would turn there lights out, standing around and all the bugs and skeeters swarmed around my light. The first carbide light I had, clipped onto the cap. Spend most of the night raising the bill of my cap, as the weight kept sliding down on my forehead. An old timer close by was quiting hunting and I went and bought his light. The tank fastened on my belt with a rubber hose running up to my cap. I could never get a perfect seal on the canister and it would get tremendously hot. Some nights I would come home with a huge red welt on the side of my leg. Oh, those were the days. lol

I can remember we used a kerosene lantern. Never had a carbide light.
My job as a kid was to tote the 5 cell flashlight, but Pop never put the fifth battery in til we got to the tree. Now we light up the sky, what a change!!

I still have a carbide light. We used a 6 cell flashlite with an extention we bought from Boatmans to shine the tree. A coon will look at a carbide flicker quicker than anything else. I won't say what we used for water if we didn't have anything else.
