I never give up on a hound, I have never had one that would start, some just take a long time. Its no big deal, they go when they are ready... Its natural and they will figure it out when they want. Not when you want. People always put a time table and when they dont meet the time table............ Its up to you as a person, are you in a rush, do you feel like less of a man if your dog doesnt start at 3months? Here is what I dont get........ Why on earth would you kill a dog because you cant start it? Whats that gonna prove or do? Give it away to someone for a pet or a youth that will actually have patience to get the job done.... Killing it is pointless and gives the sport a bad name...There is no need for that. I have had a dog that took 3yrs. It was one of the best show blk and tans you ever saw, so I didnt mind that much because I had other great tree dogs, and it was fun to show her. All of a sudden out of the blue she struck and treed one night all on her own and that was it... She was a hard core coon dog from there on out. Didnt respond to anything until that night. Wouldnt leave our side, would even go through water? then it just clicked? Some hounds are very imature and just require there own pace.. Its tough not getting frustrated but either give it away and look for a started dog, or look for a different puppy. There are to many people out there that will take a dog off your hands either for show, train or for a youth. But to kill it? WTF????
well said !
