No i have never had that happen. Main reason being if i give up on them or they are not up to par i cull them, not sell them. How old was this hound when you gave up on it? i usually give them til there 2 or 2 and a half some are late bloomers but any older and i consider them a cull if they had a fare shot in the woods that is.

I never give up on a hound, I have never had one that would start, some just take a long time. Its no big deal, they go when they are ready... Its natural and they will figure it out when they want. Not when you want. People always put a time table and when they dont meet the time table............ Its up to you as a person, are you in a rush, do you feel like less of a man if your dog doesnt start at 3months? Here is what I dont get........ Why on earth would you kill a dog because you cant start it? Whats that gonna prove or do? Give it away to someone for a pet or a youth that will actually have patience to get the job done.... Killing it is pointless and gives the sport a bad name...There is no need for that. I have had a dog that took 3yrs. It was one of the best show blk and tans you ever saw, so I didnt mind that much because I had other great tree dogs, and it was fun to show her. All of a sudden out of the blue she struck and treed one night all on her own and that was it... She was a hard core coon dog from there on out. Didnt respond to anything until that night. Wouldnt leave our side, would even go through water? then it just clicked? Some hounds are very imature and just require there own pace.. Its tough not getting frustrated but either give it away and look for a started dog, or look for a different puppy. There are to many people out there that will take a dog off your hands either for show, train or for a youth. But to kill it? WTF????

I like'em

My 2 are ones that were probably give up on, course the previouse owner never stated that. Once i get them to a stable enviroment, establish myself as there handler and what fun we can have they become wonderful coonhounds ! Some folks have to many and "cull" the dog not knowing that in a different envirment it can be turned around. It is as much the handler as the hound. I am also realistic some are not ment to be coonhound and just a farm hound.

Giving up on a hound is tough, but not all of them make it. A lot of it depends on what your looking for in a hound. You know the old saying,"One man's trash is another man's treasure". I believe that the dog must make some progress in their skills, however small, consistently when hunted regularly. You've got to put in the time and the miles. My "yardstick' is the hound must reach the point of being able to do the job by their selves, no help, consistently to stay here. If they have reached the age of 2 or 2 1/2 and aren't there then they probably won't ever get there.

i have a dog right now in my pen that would have been culled by anybody else, see i got him at 9 months old and the first couple years of his life he was not worth a **** he would run track all night long and maybe tree but most likely he would not, every body was tellin me to put a bullet in his head he aint gonna amount to nothing ,but i didnt i kept on hunting him and now at 3 almost 4 he is doing everything right somenights he is a little slow and some nights he is very fast but he is accurate i would not take any amount of money for him, if i would have culled him i would not have the dog that i have today.

The truth is, some people can get more out of a dog...if it's there to get out in the first place. Others can't get anything out of a good prospect...someone that can gets him and there you go.

my question then is how long do you give a dog to "click"? I had a dog out of good stock that i worked with since she was 6 months old. Hunted her everytime i would go out with the older dogs. In that two years i heard her open once. Get to the tree sometimes she was there and sometimes she wasnt. if she was she was never treeing. i work with her alot and talked to many people to see what they thought and tried many things that were suggested to me. Finally i just had to cut my losses. She just didnt have the drive or the want to, to go hunting. Im not saying that i am the best trainer or even a good one but i have started many young pups and she is the only one that i have ever had that i could not get to hunt. I gave her what i felt was a fare chance at it and nothing ever clicked. I dont excpect my pups to run and tree at 6 months or even a year but by 2 1/2 years old i feel that they should at least run and tree with other hounds. I dont like culling dogs or giving up on them but once in awhile you have one that will just never make it as a good hound or a decent hound for that matter.

I have given up on a couple and later they became a dog that could tree a coon but they never became the type of dog i
wanted.

If they got it you'll see it before 2 if done right and given the proper woods time. JMO
Most of the time i can find a good home for a cull with a youth or old timer around here that has the patience and believe it still takes years for a dog to start.

i give them till they are 2 or the kill season after they are 2. usually. but i have noticed the male walkers i've had that start off young and look good, will get so stupid about 18 months old that i get rid of them. then they come around at about 2 years old. aint doing that no more.
