How many of you would have a 6 yr. old dog treated for heartworms?

I had a 4 year old done and I would NEVER to it again. the dog was never the same. He is alive and well, but he was never the dog he was.

this is only some informatiion i read on the beagle board from a soon to be retrired vet. he says he is getting to the point that he cant sit still and watch vets rip people lff on hig vet bills. he has some books coming out entitled an old country vet that has pages full of cheap remedies that vets charge an arm and leg for.this is his he says to give the same dosage of ivormec to the dog with heartworms as u would for the preventive. 1/4 th to 1/2 cc once a month for 6 months straight it will not kill the adult heartworms but will kill the microfilara, a heartworms life cycle is six months and they will die off some each month till the end of the 6 months and they will all be gone. I havnt tried this but it sounds like it would work.

Get a second opinion and don't tell the second vet its a second opinion. Years ago I had a vet tell me that a 14 month old walker had heart worm. I took the same dog to an old country vet and had her tested again. Her second test was negative. I should have checked in the first vet's backyard. His prices fluctuated acoording to new toys. He had a new cutty cabin boat sitting there. The dog in question lived to be 16 years old. We had a working dog tested at the vet we used. The working dog supposedly tested positive for heart worms (while on heart worm preventative..) We got a second opinion and the dog was negative. We no longer use that vet. A vet can tell you that the dog is positive, take your dog in, kennel it for 3 weeks (to keep it settled while the heart worms pass while the medicine is killing them, so they say..) and do nothing but feed them and charge you an outrageous price for treatment. Make sure the vet you use is on the up and up. They are college educated....like attorneys.

We bought two littermates out of tennessee they where 3 yrs old we got them up here and found out the had Heartworms... Had them both treated and they both turned out fine! I finshed the one to GrNite & sold the other one and he is now a NiteCh...

If your dog is something you really like i would get him treated in a minute!

You can pick up Ivormec at a feed store or Tractor Supply. The smallest bottle runs around $40.00 and will last a long time. You can shoot it or mix it with juice and do it orally.

I was thinking of having two tested. So,the testing is useless?? You can give them ivomec in monderation and it wont kill the dog even if it already has hearworms? Ive heard too much and the dog will die. I need some good info on this. Any help would definately save me a lot of money

if you treat with ivomec and it takes 1 or 2 years to kill them out,what kind of damage will they do in 1 or 2 years?

Normally in a vet office they will do an occult test first to determine if they see any microfilaria under the microscope then do a "snap" test, and the test can occassionally give a false positive. I would call the vet and ask if they diagnosied the dog by an occult or a snap test. Some vets do recommend just starting a dog on a preventative like heartguard for 6 months and retesting or just doing the treatment; and yes Ivormec was part of the treatment in the vet offices I worked in, but it was not the FIRST part. Treating heartworms is something that should be directed by a vet, because you can kill your dog.

I also use ivormec as a preventative monthly during the warm months and have not had a dog test posivtive, but I also understand that this could damage the dogs liver and kidneys. But, I also consult with my vet about the dosages and have our dogs tested yearly.

dog has heart worms take it to a good vet or the worms will kill the dog so get it treated and if you give a dog ivmac that has heart worms it will get dowen fast and dye becals ivamac kills the heart worms faster than a dogs system can put them thrugh there body so that means dead dog if not given medican to counter reack the ivamav medican,,i give 1 tenth cc for every ten pounds bodey wait to prevent heart worms and i do belive it is the best prevenituve you can use.even a good vet will tell you this becals wat is in the pill to prevent heart worms is ivmack medican.and by the way my second cuzen is a internathonall vet meanning he took the hardest test there is to take so he can pratice in aney state in the usa.i just hope you can read my bad writing becals i am not like him i cant write a lick
