Proposed Changes To West Virginia Bear Training Season

There has been bill introduced in West Virginia to change our year round training season and limit it to only May 1 through August 15. This will hurt out of state hunters and those that live and hunt here. Everyone needs to contact Senator Browning and oppose this bill and if you live in West Virginia you need contact your district Senator as well. Here is the bill:

Senate Bill 210:

A BILL to amend and reenact §20-2-5 of the Code of West Virginia, 1931, as amended, relating to providing that the Natural Resources Commission may promulgate a regulation limiting the season in which dogs may be trained on bears, but must allow, at a minimum, that dogs may be trained on bears between May 1 and August 15.

Cameron, you should send an email stating what you mentioned here. They need this kind of information thrown at them.

I'm glad Buster is working out for you. I'll try to give you a call soon to catch up.

I dont believe its the DNR."smells" more like the WV bowhunters asso. They have always complained and whined about dog training in "their" season.

Justin,

Justin you can have everyone you know call or email them opposing this. We need support from both Non resident and resident hunters. The more response from those that oppose this bill will only help with our chances of getting it killed where it is now. I personally thank you for your efforts.

We appreciate your guys help!!

I talked with my senator today, he assured me that it's not popular in the senate and he will try and prevent it from getting on the agenda at all. He is the Minority Whip and sits on the Natural Resource committee.

If you ask me i really don't want to see the bill pass but if you think about it by May the cubs are bigger and stonger and have more of a chance. Which would help the bear population (less little ones dieing of injuries fom being caught by dogs or killed by dogs) Another thing we have to think about is deer season and other hunters. Some are as passionate about bow or rifle hunting as we are about our bear hunting and our hounds. I don't know about you all but we don't run our dogs the first 2 weeks of bow season or the 2 weeks of rifle season. We let the deer hunters have their moment in the woods. Come on guys and girls we can't be greety. You hear of dogs being shot by deer hunters during deer season right? Then what happens? It causes a big ol' fight between bear hunters and deer hunters. No i don't think it is right for deer hunters to shot our hunting dogs but think about it if we would just let them have their moment in the woods they wouldn't shoot our dogs. Right? I am by no means defending the bow and rifle hunters nor am i wanting the bill to pass. Just think about it before you take your dogs to the woods while bow or rifle season is in. For some people they think they can't give their dogs a 2 week break. They think they have to run their dogs every day to keep them in tune when really if they are bear dogs a 2 week lay up won't hurt at all.
All i am saying is that we can prevent Bills like this one in the future if we just learn to respect each other and share the woods.
Thanks and have a very good day!!!

"(less little ones dieing of injuries fom being caught by dogs or killed by dogs) "

Hmmm ,In nearly 29 years of hunting Ive never had this happen and only heard of it happing twice. Now dogs being hurt of killed by a sow with young cubs....there are at least several cases a year.

As to the bow hunters,my time in the woods is as limited as anyones else. The WV bowhunters asso. are the ones that have the problem "sharing the woods"

" For some people they think they can't give their dogs a 2 week break. "

I dont know of anyone that runs their dogs for 2 weeks solid other than "kill"season. Most Only run on the weekends.

"All i am saying is that we can prevent Bills like this one in the future if we just learn to respect each other and share the woods."

,bills like this come up EVERY year. Most from "antis" and some like this one have the "smell" of the WV Bowhunters Asso.

The best thing that could happen in this state is for its bowhunters to WAKE UP and see the WVBA for what it is.There will never be unity among all Sportsmen of this state untill that happens.

Bottom line, the houndsmen of this state can not afford to give an inch when such bills come up.If we give a little now THEY WILL BE BACK to take more.

Did everyone get this E-mail from Senator Browning?

I have talked with my constituent who requested that I introduce Senate Bill 210, which allowed the Natural Resources Commission to limit the season in which dogs may be trained on bears. Although he is still concerned, he is agreeable to asking the Chairman of the Natural Resources Committee to suspend consideration of the bill. I have done that by letter dated January 18, 2010.
I believe many people read more into this bill than was actually there. If nothing else, however, SB 210 has brought to light that each of us in West Virginia must respect the rights of others, no matter how we choose to enjoy the outdoors, whether by hunting or hiking or otherwise. I appreciate the information each of you has given me, either by telephone or email, and I encourage you to contact me in the future with any other concerns you may have.

Senator Richard Browning

I personally want to thank everyone who was involved in getting Senate Bill 210 suspended. The quick response from all of us has played a positive role in protecting our hunting privileges. It's good to know you can still count on people to help out when called to do so. Again from myself and all West Virginia Bear Hunters... Thanks!

From my Senator

Eric,

Please pass on to your members that I have met with the Sponsor of the Bill, Senator Browning, and he has agreed to ask Senator Fanning not to place it on the agenda. He has done so, and I have confirmed with Senator Fanning that he will not run the Bill. However, I found our that Joe Talbott, Chair of Natural Resources over in the House, seems to have an interest in the Bill and may run it over there. Not to worry, because even if they run it and were to pass it, it will still come my way for it's final nail in the coffin. Your members can quit calling the Senate, but should continue to contact the House.

Clark

Set the facts straight...

Hello all. My name is Ed McMinn and I'm the President of the WV Bowhunters Association. I'm not coming on here to stir a pot or cause a stink, or resurrect a dead issue. I was informed by one of our members of some concerning posts insinuating the WVBA was behind Senate Bill 210. From what I have seen in this and one other thread is that has only been insinuated by 'bear hunter' - Sam Snyder.

I'm not sure what Sam's problem is, but I'm here to tell everyone, without a doubt, the WV Bowhunter's Association had nothing to do with that bill. As can be seen from Senator Browning's e-mail above this was requested by one of his constituents.

I wanted to set the record straight and try to stop the spread of false rumor and accusations.

I know feelings can run deep but I sure would appreciate it if folks would check with the source or "consider the source" before jumping to conclusions. This is what our member did and I appreciate the fact he came to me to find out the truth. The blame game doesn't help anyone especially when it's not true and we all end up putting out fires when our time could be better spent elsewhere.

Best Regards,
Ed McMinn

Most bow hunters are against hounds. They claim that they interfer with there season. I have been an active member of a hunting club for more than 15 years. I have keep the roads open when trees fall in them I have hauled rocks and busted them them to repair the roads. I would not run my hounds 1 month before Buck season or 2 weeks before bowseason. And the preisdent of the club would not let me rejoin because I am strickly a coon hunter. I didn't deer hunt on the club property. I killed 7 female and 1 male coyote's the last year as a member. The only thing they care about on 99% of these hunting clubs are deer.... That isn't right. And some clubs restrict you from running hounds on their lease but yet they complain about the bears and the coons on their feeders. I sould have a right to run my hounds just as you have the right to draw back your bow...... I hope all the deer catch desease and die then maybe I can run my hounds in these deer hunting clubs..... My point is the bow hunters of this club was the ones complaining about the hounds. They should outlaw your deer feeders as well. You guys get mad when our hounds tree off your feeders and your cameras wast all the pictures on us and our hounds. Makes you miss the ol' mighty buck picture that your never gonna get away unless you spotlight it because he only comes in at night. So why don't you go back to the bowhunters forum and stay off of the hounds forum where you belong...... JMO.....

please explain why this bill came from a senator that reps. one of the "bow only cos.( for those that dont know there are 4 bow only deer hunting counties in WV.The WVBA has fought tooth and nail to keep "gun" hunters out)

explain why the proposed training season would keep houndhunters out of the woods during bow season.(The proposed time is the period that the "antis" are trying to keep houndhunters out of the woods.)

What it boils down to is the WVBA thinks they are THE Asso in this state. And could care less about any other sportsmen group.

example from YOUR web site"Continues to fight the battle against the expansion of crossbow use and seasons"

Is it not fact that the WVBA is against an early muzzle loader season?

I would like to see them open a gun season in those four counties. It would take some of the pressure off of the counties surrounding those four "bow only" counties. They come here by the truck loads in gun season.
