Re: Our Hounds Today?

What I mean is do we foregive them of things because of comp. hunts. Like when they lose a track and we know they pick up a different track but we think it's OK because the 8 did'nt catch them. Or they barked off on a rabbit ,but its OK because they got first stike. Or we know they left a tree but its OK because as long as the 2 doesnt get them and they come back on the tree. Or we know in our hart the tree is slick, but it's OK because we can still circle it. I know some guys are going to say (NO WAY I DONT DO THAT), but do you every once in a while? I know that I find my self doing it at times. I'm not trying to put down comp hunts I love to compete so dont try that. I was just stating my thoughts on it. So what do you gyes think and be honest.
I think what you're asking is do we rationalize bad behavior? YES, we do. Do we do it based on nite hunt rules? Yes, sometimes.
But, whether I comp. hunted or not, I'd want a dog that could move a track, a dog that stays treed and leaves no doubt, and a dog that has the coon when it trees and it trees often.
I think maybe you have pointed out some "modern" rationalizations and some good ones. But, lets not fool anybody, they were rationalizing dog's behavior before any of us were born. That dog that couldn't move the track was cold nosed, that weak treeing dog was checking his tree, and that slick treeing dog just so happened to pick a den tree, where of course, "there has to be a coon".
So, everybody just has to figure out what they have to have in a hound, work towards their goal, and let the chips fall where they may.
