Garmin + Back up beep beep collar?

Since switching to the Garmin about yr ago we quit cold turkey running a beep beep collar, With a battery situation the other night, dead box and no back ups, we are reconsidering this. Are any of you running beep collars as back up only?

I charge mine after every hunt so I know I have a good charge. The Garmin range has been debated to death on here , but in my country I seldom loose signal and if I do its only a temporary problem.

The only way I'd consider running two collars is if I didn't charge up after each hunt or if I hunted in land where I oftin lost signal.

I hate to make a dog pack more weight and bulk than necessary , so I'd just make sure they have a full charge and go hunt'in.

I use to run a beep beep with the DC-20 but after a couple weeks of my DC-30's I quit. I just make sure my collars are charged before each hunt and also carry a spare set of batteries for the handheld too.

I gave my beep beep tracking system away. I always make sure I have extra batteries for the Astro before I leave the house.

collars were charged, my problem was I didn't change astro batteries and didn't take spare, just one of those afternoons and night. "Oh we'll drop right here at the house and be back in no time"! then recasted from a tree and splat a long night!

yep, my garmin did the same thing and never would re connect. i sent it back, got a new one and i too still back it up with the ol beeper. better to have it and not need it then need it and not have it.i still think the garmin is about one generation from being on the mark..since the dc 30 comunicates to the hand held with a radio signal, there is no reason they cant improve the range and make them dependable.its not the handheld or collar losing comunication with the satelite .but they lose comunication with each other, the radio signal..no doubt someone will make a better one soon.

Back-up beep beep?

I ALWAYS run a back up beep beep for 2 reasons.

#1- for the same reasons others have mentioned about batteries dieing out and losing signal.
---for those of you that have passed on the beep beeps, think of it this way... your DC-30 will stay on for ONLY 17 hrs. My marshall beep beep will stay on for almost a MONTH! bottom line is that the GARMINS are not 100% fool proof YET!

#2- My Marshall beep beeps have LED lights built into them. So I've got 100% fool proof system working with the lights.

Once the GARMIN system has been proven 100% effective, I'll stay with the beep beeps as a back up.

It's always better to be safe than sorry....

I don't run a backup collar and never will. Dead batteries is an operator error that really has no excuse.

And a collar just ambigously turning off and stop working is a MANUFACTURE error.

It has happened to me before. ? at 500 yards and dog nowhere to be found. Collar got sent back the next day and a new one was sent to me a week later.

I wouldn't call that 100% efficiency.

Like I said before, better to be safe than sorry.

It depends on where I'm huntin. I used to use a backup, but haven't had any problems with mine. If i'm huntin in unfamiliar woods or by a road then i'll put the marshall on and turn the lights on.

I always run both because years ago I found a dog in an under ground tile a long ways from where he entered the tile with a beep collar. The Garmin would show you the last place it got signal (the tile opening), but not be able to track them beyond that.

For those of you running both.....do you off set the collar antenaes or does it matter if they are both on the same side?

i dont think it matters, cause of the differant freqs on both. i cross mine.one up each side.aint had any interferance doing it either way though. it just looks cooler with them crossing over the back.....LOL. i actually do it like this because of the direction my antenna screws in on the wildlife and the charger port on the dc 30 ,i want it facing back because the port is not covered.

I've got a DC20 thats mounted on a beep beep collar. I added some weight to the beep beep receiver to keep the DC20 on top where it needs to be for satellite reception. So, its a heavy outfit. My DC20 still has the original antenna setup where it sticks straight up.

I've got two DC30 collars now and seldom use this DC20 outfit. I like the idea of a beep beep backup but the DC30's seem so reliable I'm not sure its necessary.
