how early in a heat cycle can a female hook up

not asking how early can she take, but how early can she actually hook up with a male in her heat cycle.

reason im askign is because i have a female that i keep at my brothers house and he thought she just started coming in heat this past friday, but she actually hooked up with our male wlaker dog yesterday. he is fixed so no worries there. but im just now wondering if she is alot further along in this heat cycle than originally thought.

thanks

I'll tell ya one thing..If he hooked up with her..You might have problem..A dog thats cut RIGHT want be able to do that..Vet must have left alittle something in there..Atleast thats how it is with horses and bulls..They look castrated but sometimes they dont get it all and they can still breed..I've saw it many times but never with a dog..

I've always belived it she would stand for him she was close to ready.

I'm also with Micheal on that if a "cut" male hooked up with her he might not be as "cut" as he's supposed to be LOL.

to be honest i wouldnt mind at all if she had a litter from him, they would be some coion tree-ers for sure. as big of a bluetick man as i am, if i own a walker it definetly speaks to his ability. he hooks up with everytime she comes in heat, derndest thing, i didnt think he was capable either of even doing that.

I had a neutered male terrier that would tie with the girls. He was properly neutered, too. I also had a gelding that was fully capable of breeding mares. The testicals are not the only glands that produce testosterone, the adrenals do, too. Neither of these guys ever produced offspring.

They did have positive attitudes, though.

:-)

if they leave the cord that thetesticles are attached to they will still act as an intact male but can't produce sperm to fertilize a female.
on a stud farm i worked on they used a proud cut gelding to tease the mares with and once in a while this gelding would breed one i hardly think when there breeding half million dollar mares they would take a chance on a mutt breeding one of the mares. they use these geldings so they know for sure the mare is ready to take the stallion to keep him from getting kicked. to answer the question i have seen females that would stand from the very beginning to the last day i owned one like that

Where you got to go to breed her? If its local, breed her from now until she won't stand.....lol

If its a long ways off I'd take her to the vet and (not sure its called this) and get them to give her an ovulation test.....

But in my experience, if she's standing she's ready or close to ready, but they're all different.

It is called a projesterone test cost about 30 buck usually 2 or 3 to get a good timing. It doesnt tell you what day she is on just if she is "ready". The first 1 or two may come up nothing then boom ready. The way my vets work is it shows a color on the test strip you match it to the color chart to see where in ovulation she is at.

About 25% of geldings will exhibit some type of stallion behavior.
