walker puppy with bad front ankle joint

she is 10 weeks and has acquired bad front ankle joint and knee joint has a bow legged look. It is worse if she exercise it. Someone said it is Rickets, and we should use Calicum pill. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Yeah sounds like it could be Ricketts.

Rickets

General Information:

Rickets is a disease of young, growing animals. It is characterized by improper bone development. Typical signs includeswelling of the joints and bending or bowing of the bones in the legs. Fractures occur easily because of poor bone development.

Rickets is caused by a dietary imbalanceof calcium, phosphorus, and vitamin D. Because most dogs are fedcommercial dog foods that are properly balanced, the disease is not common. Improper mineral supplementation or a diet high in meats can cause rickets.

Diet control is extremely important intreating rickets. Do not make any diet changes without consultingyour veterinarian.
Notify your veterinarian if anyof the following occur:

*

Your pet refuses to use one or more legs.
*

Your pet becomes increasingly weak.

I had a pup develop rickets. The vet gave me a supplement to balance calcium & phosphorus. Dog got better in a few weeks and was fine after that, no problems.

to avoid rickets in my pups,
i don''t feed more than a 22-23% protein after 8-9 weeks,
let them get plenty of exercise running & playing,
& lots of sunlight.

Ive got a 10 week old walker female that i swore she had a broken leg or rickets. It almost bent in two when she walked it was terrible looking. Took her to the vet he said she was fine told me to put her on cod liver oil and take her off an automatic feeder and slow her feed down a little bit. Shes been on the cod liver oil pills now since friday and ive already seen a difference

by feeding my femaes puppy food last half of there gestation period i havent seen a pup with rickets. i also switched over to large breed puppy food that promotes slower steady growth, this also prevents flat feed as the bone gets a chance to be stronger when they grow slower

hill topper

the pups need the calcium while being carried in the mother giving calcium after rickets sets in does no good as they cany assimilate calcium that quick the problem seems to come from lack of the ability to assimilate the calcium thats present due to high protein food

SOMETIMES, A PUPPIES WEIGHT JUST GETS TO MUCH FOR THEIR STILL GROWING BONES. IT IS SO HARD TO KEEP A YOUNG PUPPY HEALTHY BUT ALSO KEEP THEN TRIM ENOUGH TO WHERE THEIR FAST GROWING DOESNT AFFECT THEIR BONES.

ALOT OF FACTORS CAN CAUSE RICKETS.

A VITAMIN D DEFICIENCY FROM LACK OF SUNLIGHT CAN CAUSE IT AS WELL.

SUDDEN CHANGE IN FEED. INADEQUATE NUTRITION.

WE FEED OUR PUPPIES PURINA PUPPY CHOW LARGE BREED WITH CALCIUM. IT SEEMS TO WORK GOOD.

I ALSO READ THAT STRESS CAN PLAY A PART AS WELL. ALOT OF PUPS WILL DEVELOP IT RIGHT AFTER GOING TO NEW OWNERS. BECAUSE THEIR EATING HABITS CHANGE SUDDENLY FROM WHAT THEY HAVE BEEN ACCUSTOMED TO.
