does anyone know what the diffrence is between the regular map cards that sell on here for 20 bucks and the 24k map cards that sell for $100? are they more detailed or something?

I believe the $20 one is limited to one state and the other is for the entire US.

No the $20 has roughly 1/2 of the continental US on it. I bought the same card and am very pleased with it.

I was asked what states I wanted on mine for $20 and since I dont go to far I had INDIANA, MICHIGAN, OHIO, ILLINOIS, KENTUCKY AND TENNESSEE PUT ON MINE. COULD HAVE HAD MORE ON A 2GB CARD I'M SURE.

24k = high resolution digital equivalent of U.S. Geological Survey 1:24,000 (7.5 minute) scale topographic maps.

Basically better in map detail in terms of look and view.

Are these working on the astro? or some reason I can on program 1gb cards 2 and up will not work.

24K card? Where are you seeing these for sale for Astros? Are you sure its not 24G?

I've got 1G and 2G micro SD cards in my astros. This refers to the amount of memory on the card and is related to how large of a map you can store on your card. It has nothing to do with map detail.

24K is a much, much smaller value than 2G. I believe its 24,000 versus 2,000,000 bytes of memory.

24G would make more sense but my 1G card is large enough for the eastern half of the USA and I'm not sure what value a 24G card would be unless you plan to use your Astro, internationally. Another issue is whether the Astro will even support a 24G card.

That's what it will be like when you pay for it. That place is expensive. Map cards made out of 24k gold...$overpriced!

I stand corrected. Good job on the googling, cutting and pasting.

Apparently Garmin does have new topographic maps that offer increased detail over the maps that Garmin users are familiar with.

Why don't one of you buy it and tell the rest of us if its worth the extra cost?

Actually there not really new John.

I don't own or use a Astro but it will work in my Garmin GPS device, but from the versions I have seen, they do me no good as they do not have my region...........that is why I posted about a month ago on the Gamin 500 with Topo concerning reviews.

As some have mentioned, the 24K is four times as detailed as the 100K we've all used.

The Topo 100 DVD includes all 50 states and Puerto Rico and sells for about $90. Many of you have a MicroSD card that was preloaded with the area you live in. With the DVD you can download any place in the country you might want.

The 24K DVD has so much more info on it that you can only buy regions of the country. You would have to buy several DVD's to cover the United States. I live in Wyoming and my DVD includes about nine states. This regional DVD costs about $120. You can also get a preloaded MicroSD card for most areas of the country, but it will include much less area than the 100K SDcards.

For quite a while the maximum SD card you could use in your Astro was 2G. The maximum now is 4G if you have updated your unit. There have been posts on here concerning updating and I would highly recommend it.

I have both the 100K and 24K DVD's. With the 4G card I can download about 3/4 of the country using the 100K maps. Even with a 4G card, I can only get 2 or 3 states loaded using the 24K maps.

Now, the big question. Is it worth it? I think the answer for most would be no. The 24K is a bit more detailed but the biggest difference I see is that it has more contour intervals. I use it around here, and it is more helpful when I'm lion hunting in the mountains. There are a few more details in the flatter country where I coon hunt, but not near as many as you would think for supposedly being four times more detailed.

I use the 24K around here, but I'm pleased with the 100K when I travel to your part of the country and it's all on one card.
