How is that different than what we had?
You still won't be able to kill any away from a house until the corn is on.
It still says they have to be doing or about to do damage.

Local CO says you better be able to show her damage somewhere close to a house. She says about the only damage she's gonna buy is if they're getting into the trash , barn , house , shed ,etc.
She ain't gonna buy it if you're 1/4 mile away in the middle of the woods.

Well, I would say that there are other damage issues besides crops, (ie buildings, chicken croops) it is not perfect but its a start, and better than we had.

for the clarifications Jeff. And as you said, there are other types of damage. Guys you just need the landowner to say he is having damage - whatever type. If your local C.O. gives you a ticket, fight it. I have one large tract of land I HAVE to kill coon on in order to hunt it. The man is a big time turkey hunter. What type of damage? Killing turkeys and destroying nesting sites. There are other issues also. If a farmer has corn damage every year - there ya go. Make sure your landowner is willing to stand up with you and that you are actually killing coon for the stated purpose. With just a few of those sites, it gives ya enough to keep the dogs tuned up.

I have permission to coon hunt on a piece of hunting property, they want the coon gone because they are turkey hunters and grouse hunters. I was told by a CO that damage to wildlife (nests and eggs) didn't constitute damage to the land owner since he doesn't "own the wildlife".

On your damage control... I had a long discussion with our local DNR and have become good friends with him. We got to talking about a number of things and of course I brought this up about nuisance hunting. Asked him what he thought, and went through the same questions like you mention Bob.. Asked him what is NOT clarified as damage. He told me that he has yet to see a coon that wasn't doing or about to do damage. He said get your farmers to tell you he wants them killed for various reasons. Tearing up tiles in a ditch, digging holes around them where they feed into the ditch, we've all seen them. One farmer showed me a huge red maple that had a large branch that crossed over into a den. You should of seen the claw marks and beat down trail where these coons had used this tree for years to cross into the den. Farmer didn't really care but made the point that the coon had ruined the appearance of the tree by what they did. That is all damage guys. My DNR said if I had permission from a farmer that wanted coons removed then there is no way he could right me a ticket for helping him remove them off his "property". Thanks to all that work so hard for our rights...now I can do it with my dogs

I agree with Ben. If a coon is awake he is pretty much doing damage to something.

I dont real carry if we get two shoot the coon Iam glad that I dont have to sneak around any more longs as we we can cut them dogs loose all year around Iam happy :)

Bob is this the same lady that used to live in Belding that served out area? If so she has moved on anyhow, she no longer works this area.

Bob,

The letter says as long as you are on property that you have permission. A farmer may have issues with coons getting in his corn crib or barns. The letter doesn't restrict us to the immediate area of the damage.

I would simply ask for a letter from the land owner that you could show the CO. Yep, an anal CO may give you a ticket, but all you have to do is take the land owner's letter, a copy of the law, and Adam Bump's letter to court. It will get tossed out.
