Simply because they are an anti hunting state and enough liberals were in power to get it passed.

They should get a few guys together that lost hounds and launch a class action lawsuit against the state.

I heard it was because they said it gave us an unfair advantage over dumb animals, and Nancy Pelosi thought we was hunting her.

BINGO We are in for a LONG haul boys. We had a little interview in our Pa game news and 6 out of 6 guys said they were against Hunting Bears with hounds because we would wipe them out and ruin it for all the other hunters. Totaly the oposite of what hunting bears with Hounds would do.... Some people just give the rest of us a bad shake with how they represent us...

They're outlawed for use ONLY with hounds. Perfectly legal to use them on bird dogs.
The reason is the belief that it's an unfair advantage for the hunter, same with the tree switches.

As far as CA being an anti-hunter state. WRONG!!! As I tell people all the time, there are only two big population areas in this state and this is a very big state. Lots of farmland here. Lots of livestock/grazing country here. Lots of extremely remote forest.
You can run virtually anything you would want to with dogs with the exception of lions, and there are hunting seasons for all kinds of other game.
Many pro-hunter laws were passed in the last year and we have lots of pro-hunting (and fishing) organizations in this state that are very intently watching out for our rights. It's my understanding that the GPS issue is currently being looked into.

I know there are ignorant people who think CA is the worst state to live in if you're a houndsman. If you think that, you're very mistaken. There are worse states without a doubt.
Do we have to fight idiotic legislation regarding hunting and dogs. Sure, but so does every state. The fact is it doesn't get by out here without a fight!!

When we say that it is an antihunting state we are speaking of the legislature and I guess population in general (because when you add in LA and other big cities it outnumbers the hunters).

We say this because they have proven it to be true over the years with their wacky laws, just like above. GPS trackers illegal for hounds. No logical reason for that, just another attack on hunters.

Same as when they arrested the folks shooting in the National Skeet championship a few years back for having "assault weapons" after they passed their legislation outlawing semiautomatic weapons.

While there may be plenty of places to hunt in Ca, and may be plenty of landowners willing to let that take place, their idiotic laws that are designed to hurt hunters prove it to be an antihunting state, at least where the ones that run it are concerned. It's not meant as a slam on the few sane people left in Ca.

You may have took it personal Calblu , and I don't think most were refering to the hunters in Cali , but there is NO question that the Cali elected officials are very far left leaning when it comes to gun rights and hunting.

I have friends that live there and they tell me all the time about the restrictions on hunting out there , and the GPS ban is just another of absolute nonsense.

All I can say is good luck to the minority of common sense folks in that state.

Have none of you looked at the laws regarding hunting hounds in the states of Oregon and Washington? You want restrictive, there it is!!!!!
My grandparents homesteaded in Oregon and that's where I moved a week after I graduated from high school. I loved it there, but I came back to CA 2 years later and got into hounds while living in the L.A. area (where I was born and raised)!!
My husband was raised right outside the Bay Area and that's where he got started hunting with hounds....on deer!
Yes we lost lion hunting when I think a lot of hunters underestimated how far idiots could go, but we haven't lost any other hound hunting yet.
There should be no doubt on this board of all places just how determined and stubborn houndsmen can be.
In the past year we put anti-harrassement and collar removal laws on the books. We definitely care out here and there are legislators who will stand with hunters!

It is obvious that there are a lot of idiots out there in this world. Do animal rights activists and environmentalists actually think that hunting with hounds will cause bear, lions, coon, and other game to be extinct or what? As a houndsman, I don't always shoot everything that my dog trees even if its in season. I will shoot the nice coon that we tree but let the kittens grow up for the next year or two. I like to just be able to hear the dogs run and tree. It deffinitely doesn't bother me to lead the dog away from the tree and let the coon live for another night.

Thank you so much!!! We do care out here and I won't downplay the idiocy of those in office that we have to deal with, but there are a LOT of hunters out here who refuse to roll over and play dead.

Times have changed and nobody here who has been hunting for at least 20 years can deny that. The mentality and practices of those who came before us in some cases needs to be revised.

I've traveled across a lot of this country and the opinions and impression of CA that I've heard from a lot of houndsman is so wrong! I've been stunned multiple times to find out how many people think this state is virtually all city. It is NOT! If you haven't been here and driven all over at least 1/2 of this state, or if you don't know and talk to someone who lives here and hunts or pursues other outdoor activities, you just plain don't know. Just look up how much food CA produces. We don't do this in little raised gardens within cities.

I've only been hunting with hounds (hunting period since I only hunt with hounds!) for about 20 yrs. I saw us lose our lion hunting and I'm 100% guilty of sitting back and believing others would save it for us, but I learned and I don't sit back anymore and I'm not alone!

I was born and raised here, I love this state (the state, not necessarily those governing it). I love having the right to be able to hunt my coonhounds on coon, bear, bobcat, deer, hog, fox, etc, etc. I love being able to run my beagles as well. I will do my best to help in the fight to legalize gps systems. And again, I'm not alone in that fight. I've written to my local legislators and they support hunting too. We're not alone!

I don't remember the source or the exact numbers, but the percentage of hunters is falling while the population continues to grow. Oldtimers are passing on or just can't get out anymore and the younger generation's interest isn't strong enough to replace those lost to hunting. Less people interested in hunting lead to less people voting for it and more anti's in office and making the laws. California today, maybe your state tomorrow. GPS today, maybe coonhunting tomorrow??

Unrelated to hunting but it's illegal to smoke in a bar in MN. Who would have quessed that 30 years ago? Just an example of how people's outlook change over time.

I could understand the lion thing. The great whie hunters that have the money to pay people with good hounds to tree a PRISE cat so they can drive up on a 4 wheeler and shoot it. Then have it mounted put in there office and brag to there buddies.
There was a set up in Texas were the want to be hunters could aim a gun with there computer in there New Yourk office, shoot about any thing they wanted to and have it mailed to them. So things that the rich ego want to be's would pay big money for I would be for attleast makeing them walk a wase. Bet a houndsman could get away with treeing them as long as you didn't have a gun with you.
