Ok im very new to this sport, i have always trained bird dogs and wanted a new change. i have always wanted a coon dog, so i took to the leap. I got a plott hound from a proven dog with great lines. This is alot harder then bird dog training. i have so many books. but have no freinds or family who hunt so im all on my own. My question is; is there any one in north east iowa (around waterloo) or central Ia (fort dodge, my home town)that could take me under there wing. i have never hunted with anyone but my self. gladly trade you a bird hunt or a huge debt of gratitude

You're fortunate to be in an area with plenty of coonhunters, and some outstanding hunting.

Keep an eye on UKC's upcoming events for local clubs near you holding events. Go on down to some and introduce yourself. You'd be surprised how fast you'll meet some friendly folks. Find a local club and attend a few meetings.
There are plenty of folks willing to help a newcomer out. Just remember, there are also plenty with they're own agendas and plenty that will give you bad info or misguide you. Often unknowingly. Take it all in and find out what works for you.

I would be very thank full of any help, i have been to a few clubs around, in shell rock and webster city and boon. Ive met a great guy who is always willing to give advice and but he lives a 100 miles away. i have showed the dog and had some success. when it comes down to hunting, i dont know whats rigtht or wrong, or to call the dog back or how to know if hes chasing a deer or when i should use the e collar.

well my dog is 3 years old, i have had it since it was born. ive trapped coons and let um lose and he will tree them. but it seems any time i go out for the real deal i never see a coon. I guess im just at the point where i think more should be happening and i really dont have any other dogs to hunt with. im not even sure if he knows what hes suposed to do yet. when even hes any where near a coon he goes bonkers, he loves them. im really wanting someone to hunt with so i can get there thoughts or ideas.right now its just me and the wick books.

Hate to break it to you, but if you've been messing with the dog for 3 years and it isn't coming close to treeing you any coon... he's probably past making something out of him, especially with your limited experience.

I were you, I'd:
1) Find some locals and hunt with them. Figure out which ones know coondogs and sort out which ones are just plain blowing smoke. Buddy up to the ones that are knowledgeable and willing to help you out.

2) Take note of which dogs you enjoy hunting with. Find a dog that is more suitable for what you'd want. At this point it sounds like you'd be happy with anything that would show you a coon. But as you gain experience, you'll want a dog to hunt and operate a certain way.

3) Then begin looking for a dog that suits the bill. Don't take it the wrong way, but don't limit yourself to Plotts. I'm speaking from experience. I wasted 2 years of my life on a Plott dog just because of my own stubbornness of not wanting to hunt Walkers like everyone else. There are nice Plotts out there, but they're its like a needle in a haystack.

4) Just a tip, sometime along the way, some hunting buddy will convince you that they have an outstanding dog and they'd be doing you a huge favor by giving you a pup out they're next litter. Don't do it.

5) Start saving your pennies. You'll find a well started dog eventually. Try it before you buy it. You'll be farther ahead in the long run.

Im not sure im really describing this very well. He trees but dew to my own ignorance i have only actually been out a couple of times a month. he trees when there is a coon around. I think i also pick the worst times to hunt him. Heck i dont know when its too cold for coons to hunt. (its **** cold here in iowa right now) ive been to some of these clubs and have had him in a few treeing contest and the bench shows, and he just blows everyone out of the water. I truly believe im having so many problems due to my own ignorance or lack of experince ( wich every one makes me feel better about my self, lol) Im very wiling to learn.

You're probably right. You're in need of a mentor to help guide you along.
I think the Waterloo club recently disbanded but I'm sure there are plenty of hunters around.

Not being a smartass but you should not have started off with a plott. And you should not have started off trying to train a dog when you yourself don't know what your doing. Like stated earlier save you some money and go get you one already getting it done. Once you know what your doing then try a pup. I've been doing it for years and I hate pups. Take it or leave but thats what you should do.

I AM about 45-60 min south of waterloo just west of tama give me a call sometime and you can tag along. we hunt 4-6 nights a week.

i was waiting for someone to say something about plotts, i knew that was coming. I did do alot of studying. Not saying starting with a pupy was the best idea but its a lil late for take backs. I actually prolly have more BOOK smarts when it comes to this stuff. i read everything prolly ever published about hounds, you know studies have shown that per breed numbers they all have around the same amount of "wins" but thanks for the advice

not to be smart or mean.but you would really be surprised how many coons you have when you have a sure enugh coon dog.if you think your area lacks coon, or your hound doesnt hunt deep or maybe he has a hot nose then this is what you should do put you up some coon feeders so you can get some hot tracks if you start hitting hot tracks reguraly then chances are the coons has been there but your hound is having trouble finding them.but if your feeders are getting empty but your not treeing coon then your hound might not be the one for you another thing you can do is put a deer camera on your feeders hope this helps.happy hunting..
