This is alot harder then bird dog training. i have so many books. but have no freinds or family who hunt so im all on my own. My question is; is there any one in north east iowa (around waterloo) or central Ia (fort dodge, my home town)that could take me under there wing. i have never hunted with anyone but my self. gladly trade you a bird hunt or a huge debt of gratitude
Hi Oli, you sound a little like myself! I too got my start in bird dog training, and still enjoy that type of training more than training a new hound pup. Infact, I'm starting a young Llewellin in the spring and I couldn't be more happy! No late nights hunting for a lost dog...no quill pulling, no deer and yote chases lol. Anyway, I was really down on myself when I first got into hounds because I knew how to train a dog...but my hound wasn't making me happy. That's when I realized it wasn't me, it's the dog. VERY few hounds turn into worthy and true coondogs..VERY FEW. It's an entirely different world. It's almost as if we have to force hounds to tree coons, and only a few will suceed. Bird dogs as you know, almost all turn into a decent bird dog (a few dont but not at all the same percentages). I would say start with a new dog...6 months old, in a month if it's not getting you excited get rid of it and move to another 6 month old...sooner or later you'll find the one. Once you find "the one" you'll realize it's not about training, it's about exposing.
