new nite hunter

Well guys my little OMC female went out only 2nd time at night and made me proud. She is jam up on squirrels and can really put a hurtin on them. But the guy I got her from told me she didn't have any grit. She is usually kinda timid and tender hearted if you scold her for anything. Anyway, I hunted her Sat morning on squirrels, went deer huntin and then that night decided to take her out again. So about 40 yds from camper (on leased land) she winds something as we are on edge of field and ducks into woods, not a minute later she is barking treed but more like a hound with a bawl type sound, then it gets muffled, so I took off in her direction. Took me a minute to find her because she was on the backside of a hollow tree and going up in it! So I quickly grabbed her hips to keep her from going any further. I clipped her lead on and held her while trying to figure out how to get the coon out of this tree. There was a hole near the top and I kept watching that hoping it would bail out. I knew she could see it by the way she was acting. She would come out and starting chewing on the bark, trying to make the hole bigger. Then she would dive back in. Several minutes went by and just when I was going to bring her out and tie her back and smoke it out, she started backing out, pulling it out, it growling and her growling. Just as I started seeing fur I realized "this aint a coon" it was a opossum! And the biggest durn opossum I had ever seen! Just as that thing cleared the tree the fight was on! She fought that thing all the way down the hill and finally got it down and I heard her crunching it at the neck. Well she is a opossum dog for sure but who says she doesn't have grit! Can't wait to get her on a coon!

1st coon

Update: on Monday 12/7 took Autumn out to our pasture around our pond it was about 9pm. As soon as we hit the gate she took off at a dead run and was treed on the other side of pond in just a few seconds later. Went back to house to get gun and was in such a hurry grabbed my husbands bump cap instead of mine. Got back down to Autumn and she had her a big ol' boar coon standing up on a limb about 15 ft up the smallest tree down there! I guess she came up on him so fast he didn't have time to be picky. Well now Marc's cap was way too big for me and it kept falling over my face so I had to hold it with one hand so I could see to shoot the coon and I'm trying to see through the scope of the 22 now holding it with the other hand. Well I couldn't see anything in that scope with the awkward situation I was in so I just sighted down the side of the barrel and shot the coon. Knocked him out to the dog and he was not hit good. She jumped on him as soon as he hit the ground and she had quite a fight on her hands. They fought for what seemed like several minutes on their hind legs getting closer and closer to the pond which had me worried. But she finally got him down and CRUNCH -- I heard her break his neck! I let her chew on him awhile and she was sooo happy about it. He weighed about 15 lbs and she's 36 lbs. She came away with only a few scratches which surprised me but she is hooked now. I got me a little cur just one step closer to being a cooner. (SMILE) --Christie

no she's not registered. She was given to us by my husband's cousin who wasn't hunting her. And she was given to him as a pup by a good friend of his from Ohio who breeds OMC's from Jukebox line. I guess if I tried to contact the breeder something could be worked out but she's 3 y/o now, I don't know...

If you cant get your OMCBA papers you could still register her as a treeing cur and hunt UKC or NKC hunts. it is almost as much fun as gun hunting.

Yeah sounds fun, I've got a couple hounds that aren't nearly as good as she is in the woods. I got them just to comp hunt someday. Well the other thing is I haven't seen too many squirrel hunts this side of the Mississippi-LOL. Maybe I've not been looking hard enough to find them. I may check into it, thanks for the confidence in my little girl.
