I need to know what the laws are about coyotes killing your dogs in Ohio!!!

2 of my dads beagles got killed by them today (May 23, 2009) when he was running them. They were both AKC Regs.

We are allowed to kill them all year round but what Im wondering is what does the goverment do about it. I know for livestock kills they remburse you.

I wasnt with him but Im not sure how far away he was from them but he said he didnt hear anything so it must have been alil ways. But his friend had 2 with him also and they came back but was acting funny so they knew something was wrong. He has them whistle trained and they wouldnt come in to him. He also had trackers on both of them along with shockers. He tracked them to where he got the highest reading and held the trackers down on 6 and didnt hear anything out of them. So he pretty much knew what happened at that point. We found them about 30-40 yards away from eachother.

We will defintly be in contact with our game warden and the odnr. I've already talked to the dog warden and we plan on doing everything we can to get justice for these poor dogs. But no matter what we can accomplish you cant ever get the dogs back thats the sad part.

And trust me we are going to start hunting them. Any tips??

This happened in the MIDDLE OF THE DAY!

Neither of these beagles weighed more then 10-15lbs they didnt even have a chance to get away.

I don't know the laws! Just wanted to let you know this bothers me! I think I will start hunting them also. Man that really sucks! SORRY man!

Sounds Like its time for a Yote Drive!!!!!!!
Surely there is Somebody in the area With a coyote dog or 2 Ask them to help you exterminate an area.
Start Runnin yote for a couple mo and CLEAR Em OUT..
The Gov sure aint gonna help you out.

sorry to hear about your loss... but right now is a bad time to let the little dogs lose unsupervised or atleast not hanging close to them... coyotes are denned up right now and very territorial.... as stated above, if threatened they will kill anything that gets too close to their den......
on another note, now is a good time to try and call them in to kill them... being territorial they will respond quickly to vocalizations and pup distress sounds... you might give them a shot...

We ran one night last week with the big dogs, here at the house it made a couple of nice circles all in hearing and then bayed in a colvert I tried to get the dogs out but couldn't had a hound in each end of the colvert and the coyote in the middle. Usualy the line out and head out of the area, but this one stayed I figured it had a den somewhere close. sorry to here about your beagles. We're not to far apart I'm in the NE corner of Athens co

coyotes have been dropping pups for a couple of weeks,and they are overly aggressive right now.We have been killing them over the last week using pup in distress, and grayfox in distress. Believe it or not we have had better luck using the grayfox in distress than pup in distress. Give it a try its fun and your doing everyone a favor by killing the worthless bastards.

We believe that it was in fact just one coyote, a female denned up. We werent able to locate the den but we know it had to be pretty close by being we also found an eaten groundhog near the place where we found one of them.

We've never hunted coyotes so any tips would be great because we're sure in the hell not letting them get away with this. How can we find the dens?

ALSO FELLOW BEAGLERS IS THERE ANY METHOD THAT YOU USE TO MAYBE KEEP THEM AWAY FROM YOU DOGS?? We used to run bells on them and seemed to do pretty well but someone had told my dad that that was just like ringing the dinner bell.

Have heard the bell works well to keep them away.
Luckely we don't have too many around here yet, I have several amish neighbors that track them down in the fresh snow.
I did go to the U.P. a few years ago to run hare and the guy we hunted with would not let us turn loose without bells on our dogs but up there it was Wolves instead of yotes.

man thats a shame, i feel for u. Ill tell ya we close up the farm from running dogs from november -febuary and trap the hell out of em. In ur neck of the woods and for a begginer trapper snares are awsome on coyotes!!! lots of good litature out there on the subject, try tom mirandas video. There are ways u can set them to avoid dogs from getting in them. This year finally we never saw a fresh yote track during the trapping season!! now thats wat i call extinction. Ive also seen some guys that have 20-30 large beagles that run yotes and app 20 guys and they hunt and kill the heck out of em

the problem is yotes are here to stay not much we will ever do to rid of them.

as far as bells i know guys up north swear by em. also have heard of guys putting a small strobe light on their hounds.

I had a dog killed last year by coyotes and he was wearing a bell, so not too sure about the bells warding off coyotes.

Tiff so sorry about your dads beagles.
I know the scare I had my Wilie (beagle) at a friends for awhile and he was hunting him one day and a yote jumped out and grabbed Wilie the guy shot at the yote but wasnt sure he hit him he couldnt find him or Wilie .
thought Wilie was dead went home the next morning he looked out the window in his kitchen and here come Wilie had a nasty wound on his side but was alive .
So sorry for your lose hopefully they find the den and kill the yotes

I am sorry for your lost. I had one after my little female about two weeks ago and we were only about 75 to 100 yards behind my house. To answer your question about the receiving some kind of settlement. You need to contact your dog warden, but it has to be within 72 hours. I am not for sure if you will receive payment on the dogs. I had them get into my sheep and only got market value, but its worth a try.

I HATE TO HEAR THAT ANYONE HAS LOST A DOG TO A COYOTE SCARES THE HECK OUT OF ME. I RUN COW BELLS ON ALL MY DOGS AND TRY AND STAY CLOSE. I HAVE NEVER LOST A DOG TO ONE (KNOCK ON WOOD) HAD A BUDDY LOSE A COUPLE WHEN MINE HAD BELLS ON AND HIS DIDN'T SO I DO BELIEVE THEY WORK. I WISH U.K.C. WOULD CHANGE THAT RULE JUST FOR THE SAFETY OF THE DOGS. I THINK IF THEY CARE MORE FOR THE DOGS THEN THE RULE THEY WOULD GIVE A GUY THAT OPTION BUT THAT WILL NEVER HAPPEN.

i have had 2 females jumped on by yotes and both dogs had bells on just lucky i got them back they both had bad gashes on their hips n sides not shure about the bells helping with yotes i still like to run my dogs with bells so i can tell where they are its saved a few from getting shocked i hear them coming in be ready to bump them a lil n hear the bells jb

So we have been trying since Sunday to get ahold of the Athens County Game Warden and he never answers his phone and fails to call us back after my dad has left numerous messages. Looks like I'm going to be making a trip to the office.

This was a bad day all around!! It still sticks in my throat to know we weren't very far from the dogs and had no real clue as to what had happened. We suspected as much but you still hope the dogs just got away from us and eventually we would find them unharmed. Your dad I felt Lucky"If you could say that" since only only two dogs we taken. It could have been alot worse if they had gotten all 5 dogs. I know this put the brakes on the breeding program he was working on but I hope he doesn't give it up and gets right back on the horse to ride again!!

The other news is that I work with several guys who like to Coyote hunt and they know a couple of Coyote hunters who might like to bring their dogs down there for an eradication party! I offered to drive them down if your dad would provide the guide service! I'll bet he would" I should know more by the end of this week or next. When I do I'll let you know.

Also I'll send the new pictures of the pups as soon as my outlook is cleaned up. I'll bet your dad could train a couple of these by season with your prodding!!

It was defintly not a good day. He was pretty upset and it does put a damper on the breeding he's been trying to accomplish but I'm glad we still have some of that blood to work with.

I'm sure dad will be more then happy to help out your coyote hunters. I know I am and I'd like to tag along. We've done decided we're becoming coyote hunters, we're done dealing with them. So I would like for them to come down just for the fact that we can learn from it.

coyote hunting with dogs isnt like running a fox with dogs... those coyotes will circle a solid mile before coming back around. if your dogs are good enough they will just run them down and kill them otherwise getting shots are tough especially in the hills of ohio.... if i was you i would try setting up close to the area the dogs were taken down in and trying to call them. im not sure what area of athens your in but we travel to zalaski quite often coyote hunting in the fall and winter. if i had alittle extra time id come up and help you out with them. ive been calling coyotes in ohio for over 15 years.

i have a friend in the chillicothe area that uses decoy dogs and does a very good job with them... that might be a good alternative rather then trying to run them down and chase them..

first of all sorry for your loss.the pictures of your dogs really made my heart skip a beat.i have had them chase mine before but they made they their way back to me both times and i got a shot off but to no avail.they are getting really bad around here also.i'm not to far from you perry/morgan co. line.hope you dont have any more runins with them, unless with a big rifle.
