Looks pretty nice. Would it be legal on casts?

Quick track required no data. Only time it used any data was when you downloaded a map. Other that that no data while hunting

The way I seen it didn't require it, but you couldn't use all the functions unless there was cell coverage.

Don't think you need cell service with the dogtra. The omni you did, but I may be wrong.

With the Dogtra you can download your maps before hand, similar to Birdseye. Smartphones are a dime a dozen anymore. You could get a device that is not the phone you use, download your maps via wifi, and use that phone just like you would an alpha. Or so it seems to me. You could also use Android tablets, which you can't do with the Garmin stuff right now.

.

The Quick Track System when they first came out were set up so that if you lost VHF communication between the Collars and the Receiver that blue toothed the signal to the cell phone it would swap if you had cell phone service and track and communicate that way. Which mean as long as you had cell phone service you could track for miles or hundred miles.

I think the removed the cell phone swapping and their system operates like the dogtra system. Both talking about using maps but if your going to an area that does not have cell coverage to download your maps ahead of times.

Of course the Dogtra had the training collars also.

Another system that I know the guys were determined to make work is LaeLaps. Basically all three of those are close.

Think you had better determine if you what to head your dog or just find your dog. To me that is what separates them.

I have tested two out of the three above and they will no doubt find your dog. Just if your running fast game such as deer, yotes, bear and such and want to be at the spot they are going to cross nothing comes close the the Garmin.

Dogtra with the 2 second update may change my thoughts on the subject.

I have not tried the new Dogtra system in question here. I do have a stand alone e-collar system and a no bark system made by Dogtra. The e-collar trainer is second to none, as far as a "shocking" system goes. Both the Garmin and Dogtra no bark systems are great and work as they should. That said, just like in the dog food world, where everything is compared to Purina Sport, the tracking world is compared to something that Garmin makes. I own several Garmin systems, and a beep beep system. From what I can gather, I would not trade any of the Garmin made systems for anything else out there. Garmin is the top of the line, just as Purina is with feeds. Currently running the Alpha system and the trainer part of that system is un-beatable in getting y0ur point across to a hard headed hound. Its the best I have found, but for a country boy, its a little more system than I need to learn how to use. For ease of use, the old 220 was hands down the easiest to learn and move around in. Hopefully, Garmin will come out with a scaled down simple to use version of something soon. That Alpha system if I don't use it often, I forget how to turn stuff on and off. Can be complicated at times. I know they have a 430 or something like that out now, but I have heard very little on it.

Yep...I reckon there is room out there for several more companies to get into the business, since we all don't like the same things. If we did, every coon hunt parking lot would look like a Ford F150 sales lot...lol.

For just $400 I think I will give it a shot. I am not going sell my alpha just yet though.

have seen the operate an don't see a comparison to garmin. garmin is the best. The only downfall to garmin is that as soon a u buy their system an collars an get to liking it they change an come up with something new an force u to change by not working on the older products. Which I find very unfair to the customers. As much as they cost they should always be able to repair them not make u upgrade every few years.

Josh to answer some of your questions as I see them.

My first hour with one I am somewhat impressed. That may change tonight when it strapped on a dog and in real hunting conditions.

Pretty much set it up without reading the instructions. Like the Garmin System I had to initially let it set outside and talk to the satellites for a few minutes before the accuracy was there.

The maps on the phone seem to be updated versions as they are always cutting big blocks of woods and where I hunt they cut one area just a couple months ago and it shows the all that on the map.

Range. Now this isn't on a dog but testing from a truck. With the antenna that comes on the receiver we got 2.5 miles. Took it off and put on a 14" flexible antenna and was getting 3 miles with the signal coming and going.

My first impression was a good one as I have seen several systems like this and ran into bugs on most of them. None so far here.

That's awesome Bruce. Thanks for the info. I got one on The way, should be here today or tomorrow. Went and bought both a cheap tablet and cheap phone to try it with. Hopefully your initial thoughts hold true while hunting. Keep me updated

Josh I will test mine in the woods tonight and they are joking here in the store that I will be buying a new iPhone tomorrow when I loose or drop mine in the swamps tonight. lol
We are working on hooking it up to a tablet now and will see how that works out. I questioned how much mapping you could download to use in areas that didn't have cell service. I was told the only limitation is the amount of available space on your device.

I will be doing what I use to do with the garmin. I will get a dog treed and instead of going to it I will drive away from it, to see what range the system has.

Duke. After one night of using it. I think it is hands down above the Tek 1 or Tek II. Probably the closest thing any company has come to the ALPHA.

The main problem with the ALPHA is how tech savoy the users are. 90% of the problems is the operator. Most problems can be solved with a push of the right button.

Since most of us use phones all the time I have to assume most know how to use them. If you can't use a smartphone then the system will be as confusing as the ALPHA.

Here is some questions you should ask yourself.
Do you know how to set up bluetooth pairing on your smart phone.
Do you know how to download apps and have an iTunes account for your iPhone or whatever you need for an android phone. I at the moment don't know the answer but have one coming and will know as soon as it get here.
Do you understand the difference in phone connection and wifi connection so you can download maps before you go to the woods if you don't have service.
If you found your battery on your phone is not going to last you all night hunting do you understand these rapid charge back up devices you can purchase.

I used it on my expensive iPhone last night and even though I don't keep my stuff pretty and shiny like some of you pretty boys do. I like to keep it decent. One night of dust and dirt from the woods and it needs cleaning this morning.

If your knowledgeable about your phone, it is something to think about. If you are as scared of your phone as you are an ALPHA. I say just buy and ALPHA and learn it and you won't be sorry.

Initial setup was pretty easy. Downloading some maps now, only hickup so far is that it is downloading the maps on the internal memory of my device and not my sd card. I am sure that is just a settings issue though, I just need to find it. Messing around with it outside it seems pretty accurate for the collar, the device is off a little at times but I am using a $50 phone from wal mart too. Looks pretty slick on first glance so we will see.
