Trees first but leaves first

I own a dog and a pretty good one at that. But he is very independent, which I like, but when another male dog comes into the tree he leaves. What can I do to stop this? Please help!

Probably nothing. Some guys like a loner and lots of them are breeding dogs that want to be alone.

that was my thoughts....was he tore up before at a tree???

or hunted at all before the nite hunts with other dogs?? could be he was never hunted with other dogs and just dont like them coming in...but if thats the case, them dogs usually dont leave..they turn into gators...atleast from what ive seen...

had a dog like that...got him at 1 or 2yo..never messed with or hunted or seen another dog...got along fine with out house dogs when we let them out...but he about killed a couple dogs that came into HIS trees..and they were HIS trees..we always figured it was because he never hunted with another dog..very possessive at the tree...

the female i hunt now is real independent too..so bad if shes not first to the tree shes likely to leave...but, shes usually first there and with other dogs there, ive only seen her leave once..and that was because she cut her foot up...but she loves to get by herself..

Set him up. Let him go get treed and go to the tree when he gets there. Tie him up and have a buddy turn a male loose that you know will cover him. See what he does there and what's going on. Encourage him that it's alright and to stay.

Good luck let us know how it turns out!

I have seen two thing lead to this. One is getting ate up. The other and more likely cause is busting the dog everytime it trees with another dog.
"But he is very independant" leads me to believe it is the second possiblity.

I would agree, he's probably been the victim to a gator at some point.

he did get ate up the second nighthunt i put him in. some times he stays treed with other male dogs it just all how they come in to tree on him. if they bust in there he is gone.JIm some dogs are just independent. there supposed to be coondogs not beagles.just because there by themselfs dont mean you beat them.

Dogs don't leave trees because they are independant and I didn't intend to say anyone beat your dog. I said dogs that have been repetedly corrected for covering will sometimes begin leaving trees when another dog covers them.

If you knew your dog got ate off a tree, you should have known why he won't stay with company.

Well my defination of "independant hound' does not include leaving when a dog covers them. That is something completely defferent from being independant.

I read what you read Jim. I feel the same way. Atleast my definition of an independent hound is 1 that goes his own way and gets treed 1st and stays no matter what's goin on around him.

I have seen independent hounds that get 'beat' to the tree and will completely leave the country and find their own coon... I like to call that "ignorance" if anything! LOL
