Sold some furs

I sold 25 coon furs today. Got a total of 91 dollars. Thats an average of $3.64 a piece.
9-XXXL
6-XXL
3-XL
7-L

I actually took 29 but 4 were not worth a nickle so I was told.
Is the above prices comparable across the US every where else?

How big does one have to be to be XXXL ?
Why sell them that cheap? Worth more for dog food if you need to kill some.

some family of ours is gonna leave em green and use a vacuum freezer bag machine and seal em up till next winter.

They had good luck in the past I couldn't even tell they were from the last season.

Fur harvesters auctions sold Iowa coons at a 16.79$ average in the jan 9th 2010 sale....thats probably for the big-uns.....still....

Family, make sure you check your state laws on doing that. Here in Indiana we have just several weeks after kill season goes out to sell our hides, if we have any on the property after that we are in violation!

Sold 42 coon to Groenewold Fur Co. out of Illinois. He has a route that takes him through Northern Michigan. Top price was $18, bottom was $1.00. I Averaged $8.57 in the grease. I had a couple blue hides that went for $1 but they were large, he threw a couple back for dog damage, and he wouldn't take the 2 wet sows or two kittens I had. Actual average with throw backs included was about $7.50. Better than I expected from everything I'd been hearing but still pretty poor.

Just leave them alive till next year and they will be bigger and you won't have to freeze them.

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

with the economy the way it is ,,cant blame people for selling ,,

i have hides in the freezer that been there for 15 yrs..most likly freezer burnt but i can scrape them and salt cure them and throw some scent on them and use them for training....
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
.......Bradley E. Hall Family,

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
unless they changed the law ,
since the gamewarden told me
i could keep them as long as i wanted
as long as they were got durning season

i guess they could test them to see if they were legal if needed...

..................................................................

i planed on tanning some and selling them at the flea market,,get more out of them that way..
in the back of furfishgame and field&stream you can find places to get catalogs to order tanning supplys and forms for making coon rugs and head mounts for coon just like for bear/deer /
i got some of the head peaces for the rugs and some have teeth that go in them too...

there is some truth to that but there are 2 problems, you'd have to get every trapper and coon hunter on the same page and that's impossible. If it did happen and coon hit $50 like it did years ago every Tom, Dick & Harry would have a dog or 50 traps and flood the market which would then crash anyway due to the surplus.

With hide prices down it allows us to have a good population. I'd rather see a $15 average but not much more because when coon prices were high they were pretty hard to come by and that's not much fun! If I make enough to cover my gas and a few bags of dog food I'm OK with that.

i see alot of people bitching about coon hide prices, ok so be it, just keep right on bitchin, cuz i am not the one who is sellin any hides, to a fur dealer for a little bit of nothin, and flooding that market, with hides that were sold for a little bit of nothin, hoping that the market will start giving back! i got a big surprize for ya,,,,, look at it this way, if you are just gonna give it away and i can make a dollar on each one, i'm gonna take it,,,,,,,,,,, but if there is a supply for it, and you won't just give it to me, then i am gonna have to just pay for it<<<< understand this my friends? put it this way for another example and this is no bs: i have 2 young redbone coonhounds, being young means nothing, these are badass coonhounds and how about this these hounds treed triple digit coons since the beginning, i mean triple digits,,,,,,, almost 300 with these 2 hounds, and killed over 200, jeff eaves can verify this, and he knows **** well that shotgun and little ann are real coonhounds, jeff can also verify that i killed 156 coon with these hounds within the first 3 weeks in pa on rte 49 in those corn fields, none of these coon that i killed will see the fur market, it is not about the money, it is about the dogs! so there is over 200 coon that won't hit the market for 5 dollar average! all of my coon hides were thrown away! if everyone did that for a couple of years, the price on coon would come back,,,, why did i do this? cuz the farmers who hired me to eraticate them told me to kill them, and putting them on market woulda made the fur buyer some money, while i got broke,,,,,,,,, i never did this for the money,,,,,,,,, it is just something i like to do! to hell with that gas money, and the fur buyer can kiss my ass too! i am coondawg_hunter!

LOL what a good attitude to have. If youre doing something you love to do and can make an extra 200 or more dollars then that's just a added bonus. I have some news for everyone, coon nor any other wild fur will ever be worth near what it usta be.

Finally somebody said it, I was waiting for someone to. I am very involved in the fur industry and "us" as hunters and trappers have NO control over the fur market. Wild fur is on a heavy decline for various reasons...ranch/farm fur has stolen the public eye with our main buyers of Russia and China... Many folks are doing their best to promote wild fur and trying to make a more popular fashion once again. Untell we get regular cold winters in those countries and wild fur becomes "hot" again... we may never see wild fur in a good balance.

Nothing is for ever and no one can tell the future. Let Chins quit loneing us money. The goverment won't be able to pay day care, food stamps, unemployment, farm substidies, manufacturing substidies, and a lot of government jobs will go down't the tubes. Then not only the fur will be worth some thing so will the meat. Say it can't happen? HOPE YOUR RIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!

Thats a major factor also Curtis, figured a few would note that without it being said in my post. I love to competition hunt, love to coonhunt, love to harvest nice prime pelts, love to trap muscrats by the hundreds.. and love handling my fur from the harvest all the way to the stretcher. I do it all alone for the most part and if they brought less than now..well I would still do it.

I'm a trapper and have been for over 40 yrs. I was there during the fur boom and before I am also a coon hunter. There are 5 main things that drive the price of wild fur, temp. in countries thatbuy our fur ( Russia ), what's in style, the price of a barrel of oil, availabillity of whatever fur that is being sought, and what ranch raised fur is bringing. Currently there is a major surplus of coon out there from the big fur house's all the way back down to us the hunters and trappers. You need to find other markets for your fur, harvest only what you need to for your dogs, or have a coat made for your other half. Go out and run your dogs for the enjoyment of the hunt, sit by a camp fire with your buddies and just listen to the dogs do what their suposed to do.
