Tattoos, microchips, or branding?

I was wandering if anyone has a success story on tagging your dog other than a collar. Any preferrences?

If it has a brand and you see it in someones yard you can get the cops to go get it. If it has some other way of tracking it and you can't see it from the road. They would have to look in to it. I think branding is the way to go.

My Vet was telling me abouts a micro chip that they put bewween the dog shoulders it can hold all kinds of information even track your dog if it is stolen. It dosen't even cost whole lot, been thinking about haveing one put on my dogs.

Mircrochips work if used correctly.............problem is, that is now always the case.

Here is a story about microchips where I live.

Many pet owners implant micro-chips in their pets in case the animal gets lost, but one Valley family says the new technology failed them.

Their dog turned up at Huntsville Animal Control, but now another family may adopt him.

Lisa Compton says, "I don't know what. Something just told me go I was going to check the DOA list."

Compton's intuition led her to Huntsville Animal Services Monday, weeks after her redbone/bloodhound mix Beauregard ran away.

When she came to the second cage, she struck gold.

"I'm thinking yay! I've found my baby. I was so happy and then I noticed the sign on the cage that says I've been adopted excited," says Compton.

Excited, yet puzzled.

"I told the guy that was in the back with me, 'Hey that's my dog,' and he's like, 'well he was scanned. There is no micro chip on this dog.' I said, 'Yes there is. I'll bet you a million dollars."'

When Beau was a puppy, Compton had a microchip put on him.

Many owners use that ID in case their pet gets lost or stolen.

When he first went missing, Compton went to Animal Services.

Compton says she didn't fill out a loss report because they told her to keep coming back.

"She said every dog that comes in we, always scan 'em to make sure if there is a microchip, you'll get a phone call. I said ok so I wasn't worried about concentrating my efforts at going to the pound every couple days to check there cause I figured they'd scan him, his check would come up, and they'd call me," explains Compton.

The problem was stated on Beau's card.

It reads: "Scanned. Low battery."

But Saturday, Beau's adoption to another family was finalized and unless they agree to turn him over, Compton and her family are out of a pet.

Compton's five-year-old daughter Amanda says, "Beau's my favorite dog and I love him now since he's gone I really miss him."

Dr. Karen Hill Sheppard is the director for Huntsville Animal Services.

She calls this an extremely difficult situation.

She says the department apologizes for the grief and anxiety Beau's previous owner is feeling.

Sheppard adds they are trying and will continue to try to resolve the situation.

That wasn't a micro chip problem, that was a scanner problem. I've got mine chipped and registered with the microship database so that they can be identified.

Like, I said Mircrochips work if used correctly == takes a scanner to read a microchip..........if not done correctly, the microchip is not worth anything.

They can't be identified if not used correctly.

Same principle as a tracking collar -- not going to work and do what it's suppose to do unless you use a tracking system with it.

I've always thought i'd like to have my dogs freeze branded. My father had one done years ago and the brand didn't turn out, which i'd be scared would happen to one of mine if I tried it.

I honestly can't see how a microchip would be of any benifit to me at all.

Wife had one of her pomeranians [sp] escape it was found on the west side of michigan 180 miles from us, the vet this couple took the dog too scanned it and showed up on the lost list. This vet makes it standard operating procedure to scan all new animals for chips, lucky for us he did. My wife does her own chipping, and has her own scanner that will scan both brands of chips and checks her dogs to make sure the chip is working and still in the dogonce a year.

I chip my own, too. And we scan them every time we're at the vet's.

Honestly, that hound that was not scanned properly ought to go back to the person who lost it. That was the Animal Services fault and they should see that the owners get the dog back.

Tattoo,
I've heard of people cutting off the dogs ears above the tattoo. I would brand or chip.

Whos Chip are you going to Use ?? We have 3 Different Chip Makers in the US and each one is Different .. Unlike the EU nations that require only one type that can be read by One type of scanner ..

The US screwed Up on this deal when they should have Regulated the Industry !!!!!!! Shelter's cant afford 3 different types of scanners ..

The Home Again scanner works with both Home Again and the AVID chips. Things are becoming a lot easier.

And yeah, the US missed the boat on this, par for the course.
