im getting ready to build some kennels in my barn and was wondering what kind of fencing yall used..welded wire or chain link? also what hight is the min. before the dogs will jump out.

i have always used chainlink but i dont see why you couldn't use cattle panels. just make sure you buy it with small enough holes that if you buy a pup it wont crawl through.

i wouldn't go any smaller than 6 feet unless you plan on putting a top on it. heck even 6ft kennels wont keep my big blue male in with out a top

I've been using 6" tall , 2x4 welded wire for over 40 years with no problems.
Had to run a " hot-wire " around the top for a couple dogs. 1 coonhound and 1 beadle that would climb out.

Go with the welded wire Brad, if Rebel gets crazy you can run a hot wire around the top!

I have had dog eat threw light gauge. When out one day and had a body on one side and head on the other. Dog ate a hole in the fence. The dog on the other side was not friendly. I like 9 gauge chain link. If I was going to go with lighter gauge wire I would use horse wire. Lot stouter than welded and pretty cheap. Pups cant get there head threw it.

Here's one of mine.
10 x 10 x 6' tall.
Cost me about $250.
I've got 3 of them setting on concrete now.
You can see the fencer in the upper right corner.
The female beagle on the left could scale that fence in less than 30 seconds ! LOL
You can unplug the fencer after a few days. LOL

chain link and concrete floors. only way to go. i have had dogs for all my 49 years. the last 20 of them, dogs have been on above set up, and have not had one tear out, or dig out. did have one that climbed, but a fence charger wire ran at top stopped that.

I hate chain link, and I cant find a good welded wire that I believe will last.

So....I turned to a six foot tall 2 X 2 inch woven wire.

HEAVY gauge (12 1/2) that you can stretch tight.

About 2$ a foot, so it's about the same price as heavy gauge chain link and is INDESTRUCTIBLE....

Nope, and it's 12 degrees out right now.....probably not going to take any today!



Let's put it this way, I built my kennels out of this stuff six years ago, and it looks like they were built yesterday.

It's the same gauge wire as a field fence, but with 2 inch squares. I can keep pups in it, and the squares are small enough that a dog can't get to it to chew, or climb!

well if it warms up enough for you get outside please get some pics. i like seeing people's setups and havnt seen one done with this type of wire!trying to get my plans altogether for next summer when i plan on building my own 8-10 run kennel.!!

That's nice fence no doubt , but I'm too cheap for that.
I've never owned a tough enough dog I guess , cause I've never had one tear up the welded wire.

Let's do the math....


You say that the cattle panels are 16 foot long, and 4 foot tall., that is $1.32 a linear foot.

You need 2 1/2 panels to be six foot tall, so now you are talking about your total cost per linear foot being $3.29. How is that "cheaper"?

I thought about the 2x4 welded wire when I built my kennel. I've seen dogs pull holes in the lighter wire and I wanted my kennels to last "a lifetime".

If you use chain link do not use the lighter stuff, once they find
out they can make a hole in it you can't keep them in. About 16
years ago I built 12 kennels along a 50 foot shed and went with
the lighter stuff because of the expense (still was about $2700
if I remember right) and spent alot of time fixing ripped up kennels. This summer I built a new kennels with only a 16 foot
shed and 3 kennels. I used black powder coated welded wire
Lucky Dog panels from Menards and really like them. They look
nice and are strong, cost me a little under $700 for for the 3
5x10 kennels.
