Looking for some info on snowshoes. The good and bads. Any advice?? What to look for. Any help is appreciated.

I'm no expert on them, but I've worn a few pair.

They aren't nearly as complicated as they used to be. Go with a modern pair of aluminum frame shoes. Just bring them inside when you're done and let them dry. While the traditional style shoes look pretty cool, they are much higher maintenance. In addition to that, they generally require a much larger shoe to support a given amount of weight due to the webbing rather than the webbing on the alum. shoes.

A few years ago there were only a couple of manufactures, now there are over 20. Redfeather and Tubbs are some of the names that have been around awhile.


I'd probably go with a pair of recreational style from Redfeather. Sierra Trading Post usually has pretty good deals on them.

Long time ago when hunting rabbits with dad and his friends I used some a few times. I remember there being a world of difference in that crotch deep snow. They were the old wooden bear paws and while they worked I still remember having to take my gloves off and tighten the leather laces on the bindings every now and again because they strecthed when they got wet. Also got excited and fell with them once, snow was arms length deep and had to get hold of a tree to get back on top of them.
Forest sounds like he has the right idea about the new ones.

Get a shoe with a wide base and rated for as much weight as you can. If you weigh 180#'s don't get a shoe rated for 200# or 225#, go with a 300# rated shoe. Snow conditions vary, be prepared for the worst, jmo. wd

Do not get the old ash framed shoes. That's the best advice anyone can give you.

Thanks for the replys. I've looked at the Tubbs already at Gander mountain, I bought fell over at the price. LOL I checked on line and they were a lot cheaper.
I'll look into the redfeather brand next.

Thats' funny stuff Rob. I'll take snow over 90+ degree days with 100% humidity that all you southern boys put up with. Or them MOUNTAINS!!!! I can dress for the cold and the dogs are acclimated for it. The snow usually isn't bad out in the open. Its' when you go into the woods is when it can get DEEEEEEEEEPPPPPPPPPP.

I just bought a pair of BigFoot snowshoes - 'course, we don't have enough snow yet to test them out. Bought them on ebay from this guy -

I use these for hunting rabbits, they take a beating. good bindings, easy on/off and very low maintenence. The crampons are a must...

It depends on the snow. If you are going to be walking in knee deep snow you can get by with the modern snowshoes. Make sure to get 30+ inch shoes. Buy the longest you can find. The little 20 inchers are only good for walking on a packed trail. If these are what you need there are a ton of them on ebay.

If you are going to be walking in open crotch deep snow you need bigger shoes with a big upturn on the tips. 50+ inches and I can not emphasize enough that they need to have a big upturn in the tips. The modern ones do not work in these conditions because they do not have a big enough upturn in the tips. It is to much work to lift the shoe above the snow for the next step. If these are what you need Iverson is the best company. I recomend the neoprene. Stay away from the rawhide. They have a web site. http://www.iversons-snowshoes.com/snowshoes.php Alaskan trail and Ojibwa are the best for deep powder.

Snowshoes a necessary evil I have a love hate relationship with them. I own 4 pairs that I use bear paws, maine guides, pickerels, and Yukon Charlies the traditionals are better for fluffy new snow because they have a larger footprint but for ease in the woods you cant beat the aluminum framed shoes the Charlies are a good shoe Sams Club usually has them up to the 250s. This months Fur Fish and Game has a good article on snowshoes.

The military has a new design that I would like to try but they are to expensive for me considering I have so many pairs already. The price will come down with time.

They do not have a frame. They are a solid sheet of plastic with a cup in the front. They are supposed to have the most floatation. I don't know for myself but they replaced their magnesium frame shoes with them so I expect them to be better.
