Pork meat ?

I have always heard not to give dogs pork meat because it is "bad" for them. Does anyone know if there is any truth to this?

If it is true, just how bad is it?

Let's say about a pound of cooked bacon?

So long as you cooked it first before you gave it to them I don' think it's a problem. Used to have a German Shepard that ate cooked pork. He lived to be 14.

Neither people or dog should eat raw pork, because it can carry trichinosis - a variety of roundworm.
Cooked pork is fine for dogs. Don't think I'd feed him a whole pound of bacon in a sitting though - it will really 'grease up' the intestines......

Well, I didn't actually intend on the twit to eat the bacon...LOL...I had some that needed to be cooked before I lost it. I figured with the holidays coming up I could use the pre-cook bacon in some of our favorite dishes. So I cooked it up early this afternoon. While I was out feeding the pups, Lil Ms. Karma decided to help herself to that delicious smell coming from the counter. May I say that she NEVER does this!! I sure am glad that I had already poured up the bacon grease. Boy, that would have been a mess!!

Anyway, the reason I am asking is....When Sam got home from work, he and I took our boys out to supper. We put Karma in her kennel before we left. Well, she is one sick lil cookie right now...Yuk! I am so glad I kenneled her before leaving!!

I would think that, that much bacon would make her sickly feeling. They hardly ever get much more than a nibble here and there of people food. I just thought I would ask if it was really harmful. Um, like an emergency trip to the vet harmful. She seems to be shivering also.

I can't see how cooked pork would hurt a dog. Seen someone feed raw pork to their dogs the other weekend, would assume they've always feed it too.

Yeah, just what I am thinking Autumn. Surely it's not the pork, but what in the world could have made her sick so fast? Just kinda weirded out about it i guess.

Probably what Laura said, she may be a little too greased up right now..

Trichinosis is not prevalent anymore in pork. That is why you can order pork medium at a resturant they will even ask you.

tell my dogs this, they're on a completely raw diet and just downed about 5 lbs of raw pork between the two of them tonight, have been doing it for about 5 years now . also, i was under the impression (this was from like 2 years ago in an ansci class so i don't know...) that trichinosis is really only seen anymore in pigs raised on garbage...

sabrina - cooked bacon would worry me b/c of acute pancreatitis - i'd watch for any signs of discomfort and they'd be off to the vet!

Just read your reply, Sabrina, if it was my dog I'd get her to the vet if she still looks sickly - pancreatitis as I understand it can be life-threatening, and quick...

a dog is a dog and my ancestors and yours too fed em ALL the leavings that were leftover after we butchered or ate and they USED their dogs all the time every day and night way back when a dog had to earn it's keep and when a dogs gums turned light pink they'd stuff some tobacco down em and they were wormed..

if yall want to see what's in the pork your about to cook to eat just pour a can of coka cola on it and set back and see what comes out of it..

Thanks for all the replies.

I dozed off earlier and woke up to feeling like someone was staring at me...She was sitting up in her kennel all brighted eyed and ready to go outside. She seems to be feeling much better now. She is wanting me to feed her, but I am gonna wait til morning, just in case. I do think the bacon made her sickly. Now that she has passed it from both ends and slept it off, she seems good as new.

I guess if I had just downed a pound of bacon, my gut would be flippin too! She was sure getting a little green around the gills for a bit! We'll see what morning brings with her, but I do really think she is feeling much better.

Sabrina

With bacon you probably have more of a problem with the sodium level being so high. Nitrates also. Both of which are not usually ingested in high concentrations by dogs. Most likely it tossed the dogs fluid levels off, keep plenty of water available. I would worry about kidney problems in the short term after a dog does a pirate job on bacon or ham. Little bits wouldn't be a problem, just when a platter full is stolen off the table.

It's a good morning.

Karma is back to her normal, sassy, it's all about me attitude this morning. She has made her rounds to make sure everyone is where they are supposed to be this morning. Played with the Redbone pups. Treed a squirrel or two. Treed the neighbors cat that hangs out in the back yard. Chased off another cat. Ate her breakfast and is now taking her mid morning nap, right on schedule like any other typical day. She had me worried. When you have one that is Ms. Personality Plus, then she goes to bland. You know she is not feeling well.

I had lots of pm's and e-mails this morning asking if she is ok. That is so sweet. Thanks everyone for caring.

Thanks for all the info and thoughtful ideas. All that bacon sure through her system into shock for a little while.

Here's our brat. Yep, she is a Walker. Everyone knows Sam & I for having Redbones.

Thanks again folks!!

Sabrina

Nope, that's totally out now. Having my surgery done that first week and Sothern Grace is due to have her pups. Way too much going on. I am not even sure now that we will be going to Winter Classic. We'll see how things go. Still have a little time to decide on that.

Did you ever hear of the over kill factor? I love CHOCOLATE!!!!! But if I had to eat it everyday, all day for a month, I'd puke too. It works on the same theory as an automatic feeder, at first they eat and eat and eat, but after they get so full and maybe sick, they cut back.

I'm thinking she had the over kill factor, made herself sick and after not eating anymore, her system worked it out and she is fine. Plus, even though you cooked the bacon, it still had a lot of fat in it, to much and she done got sick. Just make sure you watch for signs of it coming out the other end and being a sloppy mess.
