pup prices (why)

why back in the 80's im most cases when you seen pups for sale the males were priced higher than the females and now adays when they are not priced the same the females are always priced higher.

Thats what its all about these days, pedigrees and profits.

There was way more $$ to be made selling pups then...it isnt even close.

Its a fad, people want what everyone else wants.

I think another part of it is people are finally starting to come around and realize the females are as big a part of the game as the males. Twenty years ago many people disregarded the importance of the female in raising pups and would breed any female to the studs.

I've never been able to understand why theres a difference between male/female prices in some litters.

Wade your explantion to why a male would be worth more then makes sense to me, we've always found more males make a dog than females.

The male female thing is something that varies from trainer to trainer. I have had better luck myself with females making coondogs quicker than males. Seems like most of the males I have had take longer to get out of the puppy stage where they want to play around rather than hunt.

you guys have missed this one. a good female you can breed to what ever you want for years & only have to keep one dog. a male dog you got to compete with the whole country to breed dogs or own your own females. whats hot to breed to this year will always be over takin by another dog. a good female has always got a good market for saling pups.

I agree, this is the way most people look at it today.

IMO there used to be far more guys that just wanted a dog to hunt, they werent concerned with becoming a breeder, just hunting.

As far as males being better and faster....please...

this is whats going on in the puppy market, today ,,but,,,

the reason of the male over the female

for hunting is the Males dont start bleeding when hunting season comes in or you want to go to that certain hunt you been waiting on all year.....

i think the females start hunting sooner but with the right bloodlines ,it dont seem to make a difference anymore...

I prefer a Female Hound myself, they seem to be smarter, and usualy a Female is not as apt to be Ill as a Male.
I would pay extra for a Female.

Back years ago a big purpose for a coonhound was gathering hides. The last thing you wanted was for a female to come in heat or be raising pups when hides were prime.

Nowadays, it seems like most want to start raising pups about as soon as they get into coonhunting.

YOu can hunt in nite hunts pretty much year around so coming in heat and raising pups doesn't knock a female out of so much.

Also, males, depending on their breeding and how much they get bred, are alot more likely to get grumpy as they get older. Unless your hide hunting there's just not much use for an old, rough dog...

I'd disagree with this statement on females not being as mean. I've seen more mean females than males. A mean female in my opinion is alot worse than a mean male. A mean male will usually just fight other males but when you have a mean female they tend to eat up everything.

That being said I usually prefer to hunt a female. Usually a female tends to start a lil earlier than a male and they seem to try harder to please their owner.

Female

I think it was the heat cycle that turned off alot of hide hunters to females.
On a positive about Females. You take your pic as to which stud you breed to. It don't work the other way around.
