Just curious how many of you live in a subdivision and successfully keep hounds?
Back this past Feb. I had to give up my young Redbone because our neighbors claimed that he was barking too much (and too loudly-he has quite mouth!) while I was gone to work. I didn't sell him but let a friend keep him for me. This person lives about 2 and half hours from me but I thought he was going to hunt the dog and I could get him back when I moved out of this godforsaken subdivison. (I hate it!) Well, as it turns out, the guy who has the dog is sick and cannot hunt him. In fact, he doesn't even let him out for exercise and the dog is sitting in the pen going stir crazy. (Plus it looks like I could be stuck here for another year..)
Now HIS landlord is complaining about the barking and I'm faced with what to do.
I went back and read a thread on here about no bark collars. I have to admit, I have never liked them, thought they were cruel. I never used one and thought it might make a dog afraid to bark when hunting..
But it sounds like Dogtra, Tritronix and Sportsdog have some good collars now that are different than the ones I use to read about.
So I guess what I'm asking is..
Do any of you even TRY to keep hounds living in a subdivision?
If so, do the no bark collars work?
I think this is my only solution if I am going to keep my dog here with me.
Unless I can get his breeder to take him back and hunt him for me this winter, I don't know what to do. I do NOT want to sell the dog but am kind of at a loss..
So is it possible to use the collar and live peacefully in a subdivision with your neighbors?
Would love to hear your stories..

sounds like it is time to move out to the country.never lived in a subdivision,but it sounds like the people there don't appreciate the finer things in life(a good wife and a good pack of hounds).

I keep beagles and coonhounds in town, I have very little barking but when I do I use Tri Tronics bark limiters and they WORK WELL.

I live in the country and some of our dogs still have bark collars on them so they dont bark while im working and loose there voice.. After a while they get the point and dont have to worry about it.. I bout 2 from rural king the cheap ones and they worked great for me.. I ve never seen any diff in them in the woods as of opening on track nor on tree after putting them on them...

Is there no way you can put the dog in the house or in a basement? I know there are work schedules that make that hard to do. In my situation I have my wife home off and on during the day with her working two part time jobs and boys get home after school so we have some options to bring ours in the house when she gets a barking mood. I wish you the best, if a no bark collar is your best solution then give it a go.

i live in a sub- division and half for along time and always had hounds. i have 5 redbones & a walker now. my kennel is only 15-20 yrds from my neighbors house. the only problem i ever have with my hounds barking is if in of the neighbors have a cat that walks around the kennel. that problem useally gets taken care of soon.

I appreciate all the responses. I may try to the Tritronix..seems like it has a good reputation as a "Bark Limiter".
I would be able to bring the dog in the house now but couldn't use to do that except at night since I was gone all day long. And I have to say, the dog slept in a crate all night long and never made a PEEP. Honestly I think he was getting blamed for a LOT of other dog's barking. I still hear them here..barking night and day..
I'm sure he is barking where is now because he has no freedom. He was always out running in our fenced in back yard before I went to work and after I got home. Then he was in and out of the house with me after that until time for bed. Doesn't seem like much of a problem does it? He got exercised too so that wasn't the problem. I think the neighbors didn't like how loud he was at times. He is LOUD!
There was one particular lady who was trying to sleep during the daytime that he disturbed. (guess she worked at night)
But if the collar works, they can't say a word then..
And yes it IS time to move out to the country. I can't tell you how I HATE subdivision living and all the people that come with it.
If you can't appreciate a good hound voice then you need to get a life!

I live in a subdivion and have for 18 years. I use a tri tronics bark collar and had it ever since they come out.

I've used bark collars on pups and adults. Doesn't not effect them as far as hunting them (they know the difference).

I've lived in both the country and subdivisions either way I personally will not tolerate a barking dog. Its all in the training if i have a young dog that wants to bark usually 2 days with the trash breaker and scolding is all they need. a dog that can't learn to control its mouth won't stay in my yard very long.

I have had hounds in town for years. Mine sleep with in 50 ft. of my neighbors bed. I don't think teaching a dog to be quite is crule but then I spanked my kids too. I don't use a bark collar but in I couldn't be here all day I would. I train mine not to bawl just like I train other breeds not to bark. I tell them to be quite and if they don't they get a shock for every bawl or bark till they are quite. It doesn't take long for them to catch on and they learn pretty much on there own what to bark at and what not to. They even get to were they will shut up on there own when the threat is gone.
All but one of my dogs will bark on command and shut up on command. One I never really planed on keeping so didn't go threw the trouble. So yes it can be done. You just have to be persistant. The only thing about the bark collar that is crule is they will dig into the neck if left on to long. I would rather use the shock collar so I can make the punishment fit the crime. If they get stuborn it gets hotter.

We bought the tri tronics bark collars and use them when the dogs have to be quiet like at hotels, camping, or whatever. The dogs know when they are on and are silent. Wouldn't have dogs without them as they save so much anguish. When we have them off, the dogs know and the collars have no impact on their hunting voices.

Why fret, just strap them on and have silence.

Between the garmin gps, the trashbreakers, the anti bark collars, we have way too much control over our dogs. Really, what could possibly be next, collar cams????

I live in a subdivision, use the Innotek or the Tri-Tronics when they are young and the problem first starts, after a few weeks they usually do not need it anymore...I have had one or two hard heads that needed an occasional few days of bark collar wear after they got older but that was it.

I have never had a complaint. (Knock on wood)

i live in town also. my dogs have been taught to be quite in the kennels. one wears a tri tronics bark limiter and the other one doesnt. my neighbors do not even know i own hounds. this has not affected their opening on track or anything.

All of my dogs have lived in the house ,always hunt ,never had any trouble except the neighbor likes to here them and gets them going and some people walking by like to get them howling ,(there so cute). Everyone knows where I live ,O your the one with those black and white dogs.

We live in a sort of cross between sub-division and rural country. We do have neighbors. I don't know what I'd do without the tri-tronics bark limiter. You have to be judicious about when you put it on. Sometimes when we've been on vacation and someone else was dog-sitting for us the dog sitter has forgotten to take the collars off every day and then they get sores on their neck and can't wear it at all for a couple weeks.

I prefer not to use them and only use them when I have to. But I do have to use them sometimes due to neighbor complaints. Just don't leave it on 24/7. Don't turn it up any higher than you have to. You know it's not up high enough when the "bark odometer" shows they've been barking a whole bunch all day. It's probably too high if they go for days without a single bark. If the "bark odometer" is showing 5 or 6 barks in the day, then you know they're not carrying on all day but they're not getting shocked so badly that they're afraid to bark at all. I try to keep mine just at the level where it keeps the dogs from feeling like it's worth it to boredom-bark, but not high enough that they won't bark if they hear coyotes or something (I want the coyotes to stay away from my sheep and the barking hounds seems to help that).

Just have the dog wear the collar only while you're at work. When you're home, train it to "Be Quiet" on command instead. It's not nearly as cruel as leaving a dog in a pen all day every day with no exercise or attention. Poor thing.

I live in a Apartment and have a Bluetick pup and a Vizsla I used a bark collar when the Vizsla was a pup and he is very quiet now unless he needs to bark The bluetick never barks in the apt but will raise the ceiling outside. they both go to work with me everyday and have a huge fenced in pen to run in, I will never raise another pup without one they are essential to training IMHO
