I dont know about expert but I have never saw a dog that I thought was an A-1 Coondog that was not hunted half to death at some point and time in its life.

I don't know and don't know an expert but I have talked to a lot of people that will let there pups run loose in the country to get a lot of free experience on tracking before they have to start following them. Some swear by it. It wouldn't be something I would want to do BUT I guess they hunt till they get tired of it then lay down. I would say if they can be burned out it isn't a pup I would want but any of them are going to slow down when they get over loaded, tired or sore. I would rather leave mine wanting a little more and keep there drive up.
My little 5 month old is going a little harder all the time as his little humming bird rump gets bigger and bigger. I love to watch it.

i think it would be very easy to burn a pup out... i'm no expert but if u were making me do something 12 hours a night for 7 nights a week sooner or later i'd find a big tree to hide behind... also i've discovered that a dogs mind is kinda like a chalk board if it does something right lay the dog up for a few days and leave that writing on the board for it to think about so-to-speak, but if the dog appears to be giving 100% 7 nights a week then hunt it i guess... all dogs are different

I'd think it would depend on the age of this young dog.

LOL intresting concept. I have personally seen a few dogs ruined by hunting them to death. I have also seen some look very good BUT all of them went through a rought patch before being finished. It mainley depends on youre dogs hatred for a racoon.

Richard "alot of people that coon hunt don't work" Most by choice. Although I do know several that were laid off and looking for a job.

Would you get burned out if you worked 7 days a week without a day off for months? Some can handle it some can't, every hound is an individual. It's a question you have to determine the answer yourself on the hound in question. Nobody on this board can answer it for you,too many variables involved.

Dad use to tell me ' anything you're doing with a dog , watch'em and take them away while they still want to keep going. Don't let them go til they quit on their own.'

Deciding when enough is enough would be the hard part. Some seem to be a little too smart to work extra hard and others have a one track mind with a single purpose in life and lots of drive & heart to get it done. God help you if that purpose is something other than what you want.

Ask any person what happens to them when they train(weightlifting, boxers, marathon runners, etc) that much with no down time. I'm talking about athletes that are getting proper sleep and supplementing their diet with top shelf health supplements. The body starts to break down, constantly tired, and injuries happen too easy at that point. Why would a dog be any different?

im sure as hell no expert and im still learning but ive seen alot of dogs get burnt out its like a kid if u keep on them and push them to hard at a young age they will hate it well young dogs are the same way there is a surten time to start hunting them hard it prolly wen they are treeing repetively live some has siad if they are young and take them out and if they do good set them up and let the think bout it ive trained dogs not coon dogs but family dogs and i would teach them to sit and basics and ive done it to much to them and they wouldnt listen to me any more and ive had some that ive done ot lil at a time at ayoung age and they are very smart at it

like ive said there is a time to push them and there is a time not to and every dog is diffrent i went and got a female that was runing loose up time 6 months and it helped her alot to

but im sure no expert but its wat ive seen but good luck

I am absolutely certain you "CAN". How long it takes and what kind of impact is has is going to be determined on a dog by dog basis.

This question can probably best be answered this way. If you truly want to find out, load the dog, put on your light, and do it. See who gets tired of it first, you or the dog. Just you and your dog, no second handler, no driving to get closer. You take the same path or route to that dog at the tree that he took. I bet you'll find out that YOU burn out before that little bugger does.

I have never hunted 7 nights dark till dawn in one week in my life. The dog that I am running currently, has never been run that hard. The dog doesn't know any better. He just keeps going until I stop unsnapping him.

This discussion is much like the dog food discussions, you are gonna get multiple answers from multiple sources. Best to try it yourself, and then you'll have some real scientific data to work with. I sure don't have the info!

i've already given my 2 cents worth on this topic but i began thinking about it today... if yourdog is hunting 7 nights a week from dark till daylight then that means your out there in the woods also... arent you begining to get a lil burnt out also? i mean i love coonhunting but i couldn't do it that much why should any dog be any different much less a puppy??

Don't think u need an expert to give u an answer to that ?

Hunting a young prospect dark till daylite, 7 days a week is just plain stupid.

And if you do, then u get what u deserve.....
a burned out/messed up young dog.

HHuuuumm......

Just think about IT for awhile.

Something is definately wrong with your parenting skill(training method), if you let that kid(dog) go to the candy store(hunting) everyday.
