Question

First I will apologize for the long winded post ahead of time....I've got some questions......please don't flame me because I'm a complete novice to the world of hounds....
I've got a 1/2 running walker & 1/2 trigg male that is a year old. I got him for free and really got him on a whim(I know not the best of things to do). I've got a buddy that is a houndsman that runs coyotes and coon and he's got both a running and treeing walker. I'm pretty sure he thinks I'm wasting my time on this... I've had him out in a coyote pen and he runs and tracks/trails and barks while chasing yotes. My question is do you guys think it's worth trying him on coon???? Honestly I will have more opportunity to coon hunt him than coyote because our coyote season here largley depends on our snow conditions. When he was 7 months old I introduced him to a caged/trapped coon and he was unsure of it while it was in the cage....we let a another dog out to try and fire him up but he was still a bit unsure, the other dog got him going a bit but not too much. We then let the coon run across a hayfield and then turned him loose just prior to the coon hitting a tree and he chased it like a banshee but then got to the tree and he acted like it disappeared which to him it probably did.....he ran up and down the creek bottom looking for it then back to the trap and ran the track back to the tree.....he then sniffed up the tree and put his feet up the tree sniffing....he looked up and didn't see the coon then ran up and down the creek bed again looking for it.
Do you guys think I can turn him into any sort of coondog or am i just wasting my time???? If so where and how would you start??? I don't want to try to exhaust every effort to get him to run them, but just want some advice from some people with more experience than me......
you can be critical if you want...I want the truth..
Thanks in advance!
