Dog box styles

what are the pros and the cons on the dog boxes that use the sides of the bed for the sides of the box(looks like a top and doors). do they make them with storage? pics of this style box would be great. I see alot of them down east with the deer hunters. I plan to build one as I have acess to materials and euip./tools where I work.

Kenneth

any help or tips would be nice

Kenneth,

I've asked the similar questions in the past and got no responses. I"ll tell you what I've learned on my own. Deer hunters use those over the rail boxes so that they can put a pack of dogs in them. I don't know if you've noticed but, most of those boxes don't have side covers. That's because hot or cold, if you have a bunch of dogs in a box, they need to breathe.

The pros to a box like that is the amount of dogs you can fit in it. The cons are, you have to use c-clamps to keep it steady in the bed, you have to put whatever bedding you use on the bed. It just seems like a hassle to me if you have coondogs.

Yes, I have seen them with storage. Some of them have storage on top, and others have a sliding drawer of some sort.

Check out sweeney's dog box web site. They're in VA. There used to be a company in nc called topdawg but they're website is down. Go to www.speeddogs.net and look under classifieds for dog boxes. I've seen everything from houndsmen deluxe boxes to cab high boxes with plexiglass side covers. There is also a guy on ebay that lives here in charleston that makes any kind of box that you want. If you do a search on ebay for hunting dog box you may be able to find him.
