Allergic to straw?

I have a 7 month old pup that is losing it's hair. It's not totally bald spots, just thinning fur. The only thing that has been changed is I put straw in their houses for bedding and within a week of doing so, the hair was falling out. Has anyone heard of this before? I put some Nustock on the pup today to try to grow it back. I have heard of allergies to cedar shavings but never straw.

I doubt its the straw but it might be a pesticide that the straw was treated with, you dont say if it is oat straw or wheat straw. Ihave used wheat straw for years and never had a problem.

Straw is the worst thing to use for bedding ... all kinds of bugs and mites can be in the shaft and give your dog grief .. plus it holds dust real bad .

I'd get the straw out , hit your dog with ivermec and see what happens .

Its not uncommon for foo-foo dogs to be allergic to straw. Never heard of a coonhound allergic, but no reason it couldn't happen. Could also be mange mites which get in the skin. When I stop dosing with Ivermec for heartworm in the fall, mine sometimes get minor parasites like mites. The Ivermec kills most low level parasites...

I have sensitive skin and get rashes from straw sometimes. No reason a hound might not have the same problem, especially if there were weeds in it, or pesticide remnants.

it may be mold or something int the straw rather than the straw itself. mine is allergic to mold...I was using straw as well. it may have gotten wet before u got it and that is what started it. I use straw or chips now and the dog gets allergy shots during the bad months...she looks great. ben on it for 3 yrs. had to get a blod test to find out. same thing,, thinning hair, bumps, bald spots.

get rid of straw and u may want to get dog tested
