How do must of you use your Garmin during a competition hunt? I have noticed that most guys just get out and turn their dogs loose with out resetting their location. Most guys want to jump out of the truck and run to the woods and turn the dogs loose. I like to reset each time I cast my dog.....not only for the dog, but, for me if I have to go off to my dog in a strange location. Sometimes,even tho it only takes a minute or two, you get the ole, "you're holding us up" look when I take the time to mark my Garmin.

I have never noticed that "you're holding us up look" but I admitt I'm not the most perceptive person around and I'm sure I wouldn't care if did notice. Also, Garmins are getting close to being as common as radio trackers, atleast in this area. I never pull my dog out of the box until I have reset to "start new hunt" on my Garmin. Then I shut it off and get the dog out.

I turn mine on when we head to the woods. Mark the spot when I get out of the truck and turn it off. Turn it back on when we call timeout or get back to the trucks, and repeat process at next woods.

If you just leave it on between drops then it will only take seconds to mark the new location. It's just a push of a button, START NEW HUNT LOL.

you can not have it on during hunting time...only on time outs or after the hunt is over..

i didn't realize you could keep it on and leave it in the truck..what if there is a person back at the truck, does it have to be off then or not?

This rule needs some changing.

What good is a garmin if you have to leave it in the truck?

What good is it if you carry it but have to leave it off?

IMO we should be able to carry it tuned on with the sound off.

AMEN, rules should allow gps to be carried, on, and used if dogs could be headed toward danger, roads etc. Rules are designed for best dog to win. If garmin helps determine that and keep dogs safe then so be it.

Im not advocating USING a garmin during hunt time, I just fail to see what it would hurt if its holstered and left on....Its the only way they work properly in a nite hunt.

I believe that the othe KC requires it be off, in the UKC it has to be off unless left in the truck. I leave mine in the truck and if someones staying at the trucks my truck will be locked. If you dog goes in a tile with the unit off you`ll have a heck of a time finding him but if it`s on than you`ll be able to find where he went in.

I realize the safety of the dog is in everyones best interest, but if I have a garmin, and you don't, and I know where to listen for my dog, thats BS. If I know my dog is treed way off in a direction, and Im guiding and decide that's the way I want to walk. That's BS.

I shut mine off all the time and turn it back on to locate my dogs. Never a problem. It boots up, hooks up to the collar and that's it. I think the only way it could be a problem is if my dog was 2 miles away and my dogs almost never do that. In terms of comp hunting, there are few things more useless than a dog 2 miles away.

Man I think there really nice, but I am not sure I would want to reset it every time we make a drop. Interesting. I think they could do better than that with the technology we have today. Must be some changes coming ! I was thinking of selling my blue box, now I am not sure.

In hunts, I've been leaving mine on, in the truck, and attached to the rooftop antenna. This gives me the movements of the dog, the whole time its hunting. If the dog loses reception for whatever reason at least I will know its last location. Plus its also interesting and maybe a little useful to look at the next day.

I've gone back to carrying my old cheap yellow Etrex to keep from getting lost. I didn't reelize how quick and nice the Astro was until I went back to carrying the Etrex.

If I ever get enough money put together, I'm going to own a 2nd Astro receiver. One to leave on in the truck and a 2nd one to carry on me. Best of both worlds.

I dont worry about it. I just leave the collar on and shut the reciever off and carry it with me. I know what road I came in on and I just dont worry about not being able to track the dog when its in time out. I have yet to have any trouble(yet). So Randy, like others say for an ole timer in the hunts fire up your reciever while your driving, when you stop set it and shut it off(each drop). That way when those young wipper snappers are coming into a sliding hault, slammin doors, runnin round to the back of the pick up, unloading the dogs and running to cut you can feel at ease knowing you allready have your gps set and ready to go. HA HA Im kinda like you, at a steady pace slow and sure no need to run.

I been waiting on a judge to ask to see our gps's, see if they are on. Ive never felt the need to ask when I judge.

Only problem with that Lee is that if the dogs get in a cave/sinkhole and the unit is off you won't be able to track them at all.

If you left it on in the truck you could go to the last signal you had and it would take you right to the hole/cave.

Done experienced this first hand huntin back home one night LOL. Found the dogs, mine acted like she hadn't been in that cave at all LOL. The Garmin said different. She had been in there with the rest of them, she just got back out before we got there. That coon dened in that cave and it was wide open at the mouth, hard for the dogs not to go in there but so far in it was just a hole in the ground.

Jimmy I know, you and I know all about caves lol. BUT I aint running back to the truck during time out for the gps. Im packing it on my side and taking that chance so I can go get the dog and fast, wether going back to the truck or heading further into the timber. 9 times out of 10 the dog will be on the outside withing gps range.

I do hunt a little bit more in KY these days. If I have a dog that wants to toy with holes they get a pretty good work over. I hate that lol We dont have much if we have a dog that wants to play in the holes all night.

Yep, people that don't hunt in that kind of territory don't understand why we break them off holes. If they had to hunt it they would understand.

But a dog don't have to fool with holes to get in a cave, lots of them are wide open at the mouth. Sinkholes too.

IMO nothin good can come from a dog treein in the ground NOTHIN.
