Just another peaceful night in the woods...
It was my dog's second tree last night and he's in there deep. I arrive at the tree and hit it with my light to start looking for the coon. Over my shoulder I hear a chopper and think nothing of it because the army guard runs night training in the corp land I'm hunting. I get a quarter way around the tree and I notice this chopper is getting really close. I turn around and he's coming toward me just above the tree tops. When he gets just short of my tree he hits the ole searchlight and floods the tree, my dog and me in light.
I figure the best thing to do at this point is pretend he's not there and go about shining the tree. Shouting, waving, running, shooting in the air, flipping him off or whatever might make things go bad fast. I thought it would be only seconds and some GI's would shimming down a rope and hogtie me for interrogation. My dog wears a wide reflective band around his neck and maybe the pilot saw him and figured out the situation.
A couple minutes later all was quiet again. My dog never missed a beat treeing through the noise and bright light. However I never found the coon. He probably did what I wanted to do -run and hide. Just another one of those nights in the woods that you could have not imagined beforehand.
