Losing the sport. selling out

I can remember being really, really little and wanting to just be around my dad. So when i was old enough he'd carry me to the woods with him to coon hunt. Over time i began to love the sport. Not only the companionship with my father but the peacefulness of the woods and the sound of the dogs. In my family it kinda became a family thing. The coon club would have Christmas dinners and get togethers. The club house was once a family place and a family in their own minds. I loved it so much that my first date with a girl was coon hunting lol. It was what i loved. I wasnt out partying and getting into trouble i was chasing dogs through the woods at all hours of the night. My parents would ground me from hunting only to come into my room in the middle of the night to an empty bed. Id sneak out the window just for the excitement of running my dogs. I then joined the marine corps and had to give up coonhunting cause i moved to California. I did my time there and 4 deployments. I decided to get out of the marine and go home. I started right back to the one thing i loved. It was refreshing and very much something that i felt brought me back to life. it was that something id been missing. After being home for about 9 months i went back to iraq as a civilian for a yr. only to come home and rejoin the marines. I knew this was my calling. only this time i choose to come to north carolina. As soon as i got here i started looking around for clubs and people to hunt with. Finding that not as many people hunted like there were in the past. Not knowing then 6 months later id find out why. I hunted here and there with this dog and that and decided to buy a dog. Well needless to say the dog and the person wasnt what i was expecting and it got me thinkin. What has went wrong with the sport i once loved so dearly. After a few arguments and losing 2500 i found my answer. The sportsmanship of the sport has long been forgotten . The companionship has been replaced by greed and ones self improvement. What happened to the days when a mans word meant something. When it wasnt about making a buck over helping someone or just plain doing the right thing. Not only in this sport but society has forgotten how to care about one another. We hunt for the pleasure of someones company, whether it be mans best friend or someone. But we forget that through ur improvement someone was there to help you along the way. So when u get to the top and have all the things u want u dont forget where u came from and crap on the little guys just trying to get by. You should be honest like someone once was with you. It really makes me sick when i think about it. So after all of this i have chosen to leave the sport that i once loved not just for the dogs but the companionship of new people and of my father. A time once loved and shared between a father and son, now stepped on for the sake of someones greed. I know what most of u would say. Why let someone take something u care about so much. I say this to you, Because it's not what i love, i dont love the greed and everything the sport has become. It's easy for someone to sit at the top and say ok well bounce back, but when ur at the bottom and u save for 2 yrs to buy a good dog only to have it not be nothing close to what it was suppose to be. Its demoralizing. If i could id go get another one but us on the bottom dont have the luxury of doing that. so i live with the decision i made and choose to leave a once know brother hood, now known for nothing. Good hunting, god bless to all, and one day ill be back i promise.

Steve I read your first post about what has happened to you. I just wanted to say I'm SORRY for what's happened!! I hate to see you leave the sport again. There are still several people in the sport that you can take their word to the bank.

I agree with you that the sport has change ALOT. Anymore its not about the hounds but a LOOK AT ME attitude. You see the samething in everything these days. Just look at pro sports its not about the team anymore.

.

Well, I can't believe you are going to let one sour deal ruin you on something you seem to to really care about and are very passionate about!
I am kinda curious though, when spending so much on a dog did you even get any trial? Did you ever even hunt with the guy who sold you the dog? I can't imagine ever spending that much on a dog but if I did, you can bet I would know exactly what I was getting and I never would take anybodys word when it is that much money! $100 maybe, but not the kind of money you are talking about!
Did you ever think about a civil suit? May be worth a try. Alot of times just getting the summons and complaint will bring some folks around!
I do not know how to tell you this but it is not just coonhunting, it is most everything in life nowadays.
Please do not judge all hunters on this one experience. That would be a disservice to every honest sportsman out there and I believe there are more honest ones than dishonest ones.
Good Luck

What kind of a Marine quits something so near and dear to him???? That's not the American fighting spirit that I became familiar with in my 25 years of the USAF. You attack an ambush. You don't ly there on the ground with your hands over your ears and hope that someone comes and saves you. Pull your boot straps up, dust yourself off and regroup. Someone burnt you and burnt you hard. Learn from it. Start out small. Get a well bred pup or young started dog and finish him yourself. Thank you for your service. Semper Fi!!!

yes sir and thats where the dishonest part comes in. this gentlemen told me that if i didnt like the dog to bring her back and he'd make it right. 7 months later still nothing. i understand where ur coming from. and sir ill be back when i can afford to get me a good hound. see i enjoy competition hunting probably the best. i love meeting new people and the competitive side of hunting. if i dont have something that can compete when i take it to the hunts. theres no sense in me going. thats why i spent 2500 on this dog she treed 4 coons the night i tried her. but i soon found out she was a feeder bucket dog. when i can afford that type of dog ill get back in. until then ill just sit on the bench and watch the game. thank u for ur remarks sir.

i though i taught you better than that

son i have told you time after time that most of these breeders don't know what a coondog is. this man appears to be one of them that is not a true coonhunter. he just sale coonhounds not coondogs for a living and most of these have no ideal what a real coondogs are. they never hunt them and they sometime put the wrong papers on a dog just to get more out of them. i am 51 years old and have been hunting since i was 16 years old and i have seen it all. you have better luck buying from and old country boy than from a hot shot who know nothing about a coondog. i lay you 2 to 1 he never hunted this female or even had her in the woods. you were taugh to be honesty is the best polisty. God will judge him you don't just feel sorry for him and pray that god change his life before it to late. come here get candy and take her down there and show that man what a real coondog is. i am disappointed in U.K.C asking you to take your first commet off. i am a UKC offical and in the old day this man would have been bard from UKC. i guest money speak louder than words.

Steve,

I believe I talked to you on the phone. The things that you say are gone from this sport are not. Unfortunately, some times there are people in this world who will take advantage of other people, but they are in every facet of society.

Look closely and seek individuals like yourself out in this sport and I believe you will find what you believe is lost. I have made many friendships and have had my life enriched from fellow members of the coon hunting faternity including my wife and sons.

So in short, the attributes of coon hunting you so fondly remember are not gone. I wish you the very best.

It's not a sport, it's a passion. The competition side of it is a sport...why stop the passion (coonhunting) when you can instead step away from the sport part only (comp. hunting).

My best friend and hunting partner died last year, hunting without that good old dog is not the same, I cannot afford a competition style hound (4 kids and wife works PT), but I have not quit, I have a puppy and will work hard this fall/winter to make her a coonhound....If winning and having a great dog were all this was about I would have stopped a long time ago.

I hope you can rediscover the things you are talking about in your posts about coonhunting. I've only been in it for about 5 yrs, but in those short years I've found more great friends than I can count and I've been places I never thought I could go. Sure, I've met a few bad apples and my dogs aren't the greatest, but I'm still out there under the stars every night. I have an almost 13 y/o hound that will forever be my measuring stick and sure it's definitely not the same without him, but now I have young dogs out of him that are paving the way for my next few years in the hunts. My first date was also on a coonhunt and I can proudly say that my boyfriend and I still enjoy hunting together. Our local club is warm, friendly and family oriented and we can keep it that way by making it to the monthly meeting to help make decisions...Once again I'm so sorry to hear that someone did something so disheartening to you. I know that this is a passion and way of life, it has sure engulfed mine! (in a good way)...I'm only 19 and a girl in a man's sport and I have experienced some of my greatest moments in the woods listening to the hounds. That's what it's all about, you said it yourself.....Your friends and family are always behind you and I'm sure you'll make a comeback in this crazy habit we all love so much! Take care and thank you for your service to this country! -Danielle Haney @ Real Tree Kennels

We ran into a situation at Autumn Oaks, I was spectating, my good friend was hunting a pup and had an honest high score with a lot of time left to hunt and everyone withdrew, had to go back to the clubhouse and get another non hunting judge, upon arrival to the club he and the dog was scratched over the most bogus call ive ever heard of, the dog deserved to win and could have won the whole hunt, comes to find out the two that jumped uped and screamed the loudest to have him scratched was so called friends and are members of our local club and was not hunting just at the club house, the two that had him scratched has never owned a dog worth owning and has never won anything at all it boiled down to jealousy, my friend has won a lot all over and is always hunting a very nice hound, BUT it is what it is and we went home with our heads hung very low but he will recover and come back stronger than ever you just cant let a couple of *******s ruin everything

im not going to go into to much detail, they just bent the rules into their favor, the master of hounds did what he felt was right, i feel he made up his mind rather fast instead of sitting down and listening to the whole situation, the rule they supposedly broke was supposed to be a common sense rule, if the intention of cheating was diliberate they should have been scratched but there was NO such intention at all and the said thing is it can be proven there was no such intention, i can compare it to havin one of those hand held squallers in your pocket while at the tree before shine time, you move it sqeaks you get scratched for squalling before your supposed, thats not what it was but the situation is comparable, there was no intention but you got scratched anyway, like i said earlier the master of hounds did what he thought was right i just dont agree with it and think it should have been handled different
i cant garuntee she would have won it but i would have liked to seen what would have come about it
they were just clicking that night, shes only 13 mo old
i want to restate the fact im not talking bad about the master of hounds he was just trying to do his job
