Have a dog that has a torn ACL in a rear leg. Has anyone ever had this in a dog, and what have you done with it? Vet says it can be repaired but 80% chance it will blow out again if I hunt her and it will be back to where we are now. If I don't get it fixed, he says she can still hunt after she rests it awhile but will never be 100%. What experience have you had with this injury? Dog is 4. Thanks in advance.

same info. there is 3 types of surgeries $800 $1200 $2000 take your pick the biggest thing is to lay them up good until it fully heals. or you will blow it right out again....good luck

had this happen to a pup, vet said surgery 1500+ or take my chances and rest her. 1500+ is far to much to spend on a 5 month old pup so resting it was. 6 months on a chain and she is fine.

I have a 3 year old walker that started carrying his back leg. The joint swelled badly. He would stop hopping and I would take him hunting and by the time I got home he would be carrying the leg again. This was about 9 months ago. I took him to the vet and he x-rayed and said a torn aclu and it would cost about $1500 and about 90% chance it would not hold. I laid him up for a while and it still bothered him some when I would take him hunting. It finally got better no swelling and is as good as new. Cannot tell he was ever bothered with it and doing great/ Hope your dog gets ok

I was just curious because I had a young dog doing good, it started carrying a back leg, went on about a year, didnt really affect her but I culled her because I figured it was genetic,

Noticed her carrying the leg a little bit about a month ago. She came into heat and I laid her up a month, took her back hunting the first time last week and she acted like she didn't want to hunt. She has a lot of faults but that is not one of them. Finally went hunting, made a tree and treed on both hind legs. Second turnout, I caught her up and she was carrying the leg badly. She's carrying it now in the kennel. It's also somewhat swollen, but not terribly.

Vet gave me estimate of $2500 to get it fixed by a specialist. I'm encouraged by the fact that it can heal up sometimes on it's own.

i have been in the operating room for 17 yrs. 12 of that is sports medicine and work with world famous Dr James Andrews. the acl same in adults as dogs ( yes i know humans and k-9 not the same) the acl will not "HEAL" but will develop scar tissue. it will function properly but will at times have swelling and joint pain. could lead to wearing out cartilage on the knee surfaces due to improper alignment. people that are not athletes sometimes choose to do nothing and let it scar in. a coondog is about as athletic as it gets. my uncle is a vet and i had this discussion with him not 3 weeks ago. he doesnt think its a good thing b/c most of the time they fail. he thinks a dog will be fine if given the time to properly scar in. guess it all depends on how much this dog means to you. either way the dog would probably be ok. he also said the opinion varies from vet to vet ( lol just like all doctors)

I figured about as much. What kind of time are we talking about for the scar tissue to develop? 6-8 weeks, or more?

my guess would be a couple months at least.....people usually take 3 months or so....some do fine and some still have problems. speaking of which i talked to a girl i work with today and she had a acl done on her golden retriever. she said she spent alot of money and didnt do a bit of good.
