I know we talk about brands alot, but how much food is best to feed. I know this will vary a little, but it seems some dogs will eat as much as you feed them. What is the best way to determine how much?

I agree with Doug. I use the same amounts - a one pound coffee can. Adjust for each dog. The real secret to this measurement is his statement "good quality feed". I feed purina - but any good quality dog food should measure about to this same usage. If you have to feed alot more - you guessed it- you are shoveling up the money you are spending.

one cup per ten pounds. figure on amount of exercise however. and some just stay plump regardless! lol! then feed a very low amount of fat and protein. i always observe the hip bones and ribs and feed twice a day as well.

I use a scoop the same way some are describing a coffee can. If I see a dog that is getting too fat, I will cut back. Pregnant females and the ones sucking pups get more. A couple of my dogs are a little too fat, but most are fairly close to the right weight. In the winter, I feed half again as much and the dogs that I am pounding, get even more.

Go with Purina! We switched about 3 months ago and it's doing WONDERFUL!

You can ask Coon Dawg about how our dogs looked in March, and how they look now. The look like dogs now. Actually, both are a little overweight, they get hunted at least 4 nights out of the week, and are only fed 3 CUPS OF FEED A DAY!!

That's saying something for the feed!

I have used the automatic feededs for years with good results as long as they start on them as pups older dogs that have never had a constant food supply will try to eat themselves sick if you suddenly leave 25 pounds of food sitting there. I live in upstate new york 20 mins form canada so we get 40 below temperatures and the dogs need more food when its this cold. Also during the cold winter months I cook up food for them of corn meal and a meat base for flavor the dogs love this hot meal when its cold out but you must add vitamins and a protein supplement to this gruel as corn meal alone will make them fat but malnurished.

what were you feeding your dogs before the purina? and what type of purina are you feeding now?sounds like your having great results

i also feed my hounds by keeping food available at all times neverhad one overeat as i also start them as pups using this method they also eat less because its always there i also start pups by soaking there food to expand it and never had a problem with a pup bloating of course you can't wet it in warm weather unless you change it often as it will spoil
i also won't feed any food thats main ingredient is corn and chicken by products as far as i'm concerened this is hog feed chicken by products include anything not edible by humans including heads feathers feet intestines i will only feed dogfood whose first ingredient is meat ingredients are listed with the first three ingredients being the basic ingredients the rest filler and additives
take whatever your feeding soak it and see what comes out
dogs are by nature meat eaters not vegetarians
as one of our forum members says the proof is in the pudding i have several real old labss that have only been to the vets for routine checkups and they look half there age and are still active hunters my hounds are younger and hunted hard and there always fit

I have my hounds on PMI, they get three cups a day this time of year. In the winter they get 6 cups a day. They seem to do well on this feed. Wayne, what are you feeding?

i'm feeding iams and diamond i like iams for the pups i use the iams formulated for large breed dogs it's formulated to promote good bone growth and puppies don;t get fat feeding quality food is cheaper in the long run they eat less look better and have less health problems
