SafeGuard does not kill the most common type of tapeworms in dogs which is the type they get from fleas, It does kill some less common forms however.

For the Flea type of tapeworm I use Zimectrin Gold horse wormer.

Take my advice, and check with your vet before you give your dog horsewormer. May not show up now, but could show up later.

NO MO

I believe they took it off the market, but I could be wrong. I can't find anywhere to get it anymore!

This is real simple. For all species of tapeworms, use praziquantel. That is what the vet is going to give them. That is one of the two ingredients in zimectrin gold. however, with ZG you have to worry about the overdosing of ivermectin.
Go to your local feed or animal health supply and get praziquantel. It will come in brand name of Trade Winds, D-worm or several others. Then make sure you are controlling fleas. That is where the most common type of tape in dogs comes from.

I personally had no luck with ADAMS NO-MO .Even when I redosed a month later. The main ingredient in it should have worked .I personally believe the quality control was inadequent because another company, Dr. Adams, which went out of business worked 100 percent and used the same ingredient at a lower dosage.I even wrote Kathy about the problem and did not believe the accuracy of her response.I still have the letter.
The best over the counter I have found is praziquantel .It is the same as Droncit which you could only get from the Vet.It works.

That would depend on if you are wanting to use it to prevent heart worms or eliminate tapeworms. The ratio of the ivermectin and praziquantel in ZG are very different from what you would normally give a dog of each of these ingredients. That is why I choose to administer these two wormers separately.

why not just be sure and buy the correct wormer from the vet?
I do know for a fact Drontal Plus gets the tapes. Or at least thats what my vet says!
I know theres other ways maybe to treat but don't forget that over dosing will hurt the dogs vital organs. May not show for a year or more too.
Just a thought!

praziquantel , you find find it on ebay, says for fish but is 34mg tab, that will do a ten # dog so dose accordingly. cheaper too, about 10$ for 5 tabs.

I use .27% Ivomec. 1cc per 20# dog weight. Takes care of tapes, fleas, mange, ticks. The only thing I have heard is that you definitely do not want to overdose them, and if they already have heart worms, it will kill the dog with the worm.

I've used ivomec about 10 years. It does great, but does not kill tapes.

Also, ivomec on a 20 pound dog should be 2/10 of a cc. 1 whole cc is enough for a 100 pound dog.

Ivomec comes in different concentrations. I use the .27% solution for feeder pigs. Give it orally with a syringe, and use the recommended dose of 1cc per 20#. Ivomec also comes in 1%. Be sure to pay attention to the concentration and directions.
